I was wondering what others believed in. I have been brought up to believe in once you have made the commitment to the lord thats it, you cannot loose your salvation. I believe in once saved always saved or thats what i have learned from the bible.

So what do you believe in...? [IMG]

Saved, in the faith of God the Father in the Son Jesus Christ, before the foundation of the world. No man can pluck me out of His hand. My hope and my trust is that I've always been His and I will always be His.

    I'm a "once saved, always saved"-er. [IMG]

Unless God lied to me, when He promised "he who believes in the Son has eternal life", he actually meant "eternal life".

Yes. It is all of God and not of Bob, so I have complete confidence in Him, based on His Word (and that He cannot lie!)

"Once saved, always saved" is trite little quote that I can say I do believe, but am not completely convinced of it.

Unless God lied to me, when He promised "he who believes in the Son has eternal life", he actually meant "eternal life".

And did He actually mean "he who believes in.."? It's likely most or all of us know someone who says he/she "once believed," but no longer believes. So if that person truly does not believe now, are 3 possibilities then: (1)that person believed and had salvation and now does not believe and does not have salvation, (2)that person attained salvation and still has it in spite of having present unbelief, or (3)that person never believed. 'Customarily' a Baptist would say #3, but that may be a copout in order support a preconceived notion.

A few years ago I, too, might have said #3. But giving the matter a lot of thought, that is what I am not 'completely convinced' of now. Besides, if indeed there is no way to lose salvation once attained, then you cannot lose it by believing you can lose it. In that case, there is no reason to put a lot of emphasis on the doctrine.

God believes "once saved, always saved, and can't lose salvation", so should we!

In Christ, Forever and from the point of salvation, always,

I do believe in once saved, always saved myself, but on another thread someone made a commite like they believe you could loose you salvation. But i myself, I DONOT believe that, "cause to me if you believe that" you have not found salvation to start with.

Jesus Christ died on the cross (and rose again in 3 days) to pay for all sins, past, present and future. To have to renew it for each subsequent sin after salvation would mean that Jesus didn't die for all sins as the Bible says he did.

Once a person becomes a child of God, they can't be anything other than His child. An illustration: If a parent has a child, and the child rebells and turns their back on their parent, they can't by any action make themselves not their parents child.

Throughout Christian history, most Christians apparently have thought they could lose salvation. 'Eternal security' does not seem to appear in any writings until the 17th century or later. Of course, most also believed they became 'Christians' upon infant 'baptism,' so the only choice they ever had was to become 'unsaved.' Thankfully that inverted idea was turned around right.

Nevertheless, you are saying that despite infant christening in the Catholic, Anglican, or Lutheran churches, despite confessing to priests and selling out their own thinking to church authorities... they could still be saved. But believing they could lose their salvation means it is impossible to have ever had salvation? I think that's nutty.

You are saved by believing Jesus Christ is Lord, not by believing you can never lose your salvation.

Catholicism thrives on insecurity. It is not strange that many protestant denominations that were developing their own theology adopted catholic views and nuances.

The Bible talks about a great falling away that will take place in the last days. Is it possible that this is talking about people that are saved that turn from God and His salvation?

I am not making a statement about wheither a person can loose their salvation but This is an important question when considering wheither a person can loose their salvation.

I do believe, unequivocally, that once a person is truly saved by God, they will remain saved. However, I don't like the trite phrase, "Once sved always saved," because in our times of light and easy evangelism, the phrase's de facto meaning has become: "Once professed, surely possessed."

I Prefer the old phrase "perseverance of the saints," because the truly saved will persist in the faith, while those who only SAID "lord, Lord..." (Mat 7:21-23), only think they are saved.

    IF Saved, Always saved!

If there was anything you could DO to STAY saved, then there could have been something you could DO to GET saved, IMO.

BTW, off topic, but the older I get the more puzzled I am by the reasoning "the historical church did not believe" as it refers to the predominently catholic Church from Constantine to the Reformation.

Given that said institution purposly kept the vast majority of it's adherents in illiterate ignorence and the great majority of it's learned "thinkers" were more interested in perpetuating their own power structure, I have a hard time putting a lot of credence in their recorded opinions.
I recognize there were exceptions, but by and large.......
