I would like to ask for everyone's prayers as I start a new chapter in my educational life. Today I began the process of applying to Liberty University's "Doctor of Education" program. I will be re-taking the M.A.T. in January to get my score above 400 and Lord willing I will be able to start a class in the late Spring or Summer. It will probably be a long process since teaching at a community college does not allow for a great deal of free time (or money). However Lord willing I want to go ahead and get this ball rolling. Nothing is certain at this point, of course, but I have started working towards this goal.

The Teaching & Learning Concentration allows a student to do either. I will, of course, be focused on higher education (college) since that is my career.

Blended. Online during the Fall/Spring and campus session during the summer.

    Martin,

Congrats and "God Speed!" Just a few questions if I may? And you know that you and I have had a really good career here at the BB over the years, and may I say even a "friendship?"

Why Liberty? Why now? And help me remember, I thought your interests and discipline was Church History or History proper?

Help and old man's memory out here could you please?

    "That is all!"

The best of luck and my prayers are with you as you start this long, tough road to a Ph.D.

Most certainly! Though I doubt you are really "old". After all, old is a state of mind (or at least that is what I like to tell myself).

    Why Liberty?

Honestly, it is convenient and affordable. As a community college instructor I just don't have time to travel to Campbell University or pay for Regent University. Liberty University's EdD is affordable and is offered in a blended format. Also they have a very good program.

    Why now?

It has been on my mind for some time. Why now? Really if I don't get the ball rolling now I might never do it. I do not plan on rushing on this. The max time allowed to complete the degree is 7 years. I might take all seven.

I thought your interests and discipline was Church History or History proper?

You are correct, those are my academic (personal) interests. The choice to go for a EdD has less to do with academic interest and more to do with career advancement. An EdD is more valuable in the community college setting than a PhD is. Instructors with PhDs are few and far between at the smaller community colleges. Personally, I consider such people under employed. The Community College system offers no tenure or security and the teaching load is very heavy (7 classes per semester). Those who have PhDs should be at the university where they can advance their scholarship. The EdD will open doors to me in administration in the future. I'm not necessarily thinking along the line of a VP (etc), but I am thinking about Dean positions (etc).

My "passion" is teaching adults. While I enjoy teaching the typical college age student as well, my real "love" is teaching adults. I do that on Sundays at church and I am greatful to have the opportunity to do it everyday of the week. The EdD degree will also, I hope, improve my knowledge/skills in this area.

As for a History PhD, I have some what ruled that out. There are no blended programs nor are there any programs within driving distance. My calling as at the community college level, not the university level. So I am under no pressure to go the PhD route nor do I feel any push in that direction. One could argue, in fact, that the EdD is optional for me. And one would be right. However it is a route that I think will pay off in the future.

Thanks for your help and interest Rhetorician!

And in my prayers, too. Major mid-life decision.

My EdD concentration was in Teaching Secondary (Social Studies - since that was my BS/MS) and was able to write an entire text/course on high school geography in place of a conventional dissertation . . and SELL it to a textbook company that more than paid for the education!!

Of course, the unaccredited Bible College bellied up and the degree is nice wallpapering; when teaching at Casper College I could be called "Dr" but paid only at an MSAT level. Grrrr.

Due to scheduling beyond my control, I will be unable to begin the Ed.D program this year (2010). However I have not given up and I am still looking starting a EdD or PhD program in the next five years.

I hate that for you Martin! I know when I'm ready to start something, it's disappointing when it won't come together. I'll be praying for the right program for you! (and year!)

Thanks! It is frustrating because I was all ready to go. Sometimes things just don't work out. Hopefully I will be able to get the ball rolling in 2011.

Sometimes these things happen. I know how frustrating the preparation and application process can be. Keep on keeping on man, you'll wrap it up one day for certain.

Never forget any doctorate (worth its salt) is more of a marathon than a sprint. You'll do great! :D
