I think the Duggars threaten the manhood and womanhood of some on this board.

Anyway, Thank you, God for the Duggars and their prolife testimony.

I am not sure that I used that word except to say some of his followers had a cultlike devotion to him, which is true. And to me that is irrelevant. First, one must establish whether or not Gothard is teaching biblically. He's not. That is the main issue.

Manhood and womanhood are defined by the Bible, not by Bill Gothard, whose teachings on this are messed up and unbiblical. The issue is not one of prolife but following the legalisms of Bill Gothard.

Nice red herring...this has nothing to do with being pro life. I think you type just to get a response.

See Rev, this should be your first clue that you are wrong on this issue.. when Robert Snow agrees with you and I don't...

    ROFL!!!!

    :tongue3:

I really don't care how many kids they have.. I just will not allow that garbage on my TV... and maybe, if enough people quit watching, it may save the children.

The main idea of quiverfull is that personal responsibility over procreation is a sin. Quiverfull doesn't simply say it's okay to not use birth control and have children, it claims that excercising personal responsibility over procreation is an affront to God. It further doesn't simply say "let God decide", the implication that you're supposed to have as many children as possible.

The movement perverts "be fruitful and multiply". It further violates the commandment of "thou shalt not put the Lord thy God to the test" by failing to excercise personal responsibility. It further violates "Judge not, that ye be not judged" by claiming that those who use any sort of birth control are sinning. And, btw, some family friends of mine are part of the "quiverfull" movement, and have stated expressly these things. So this is first hand movement. Believe me, I got a tongue lashing when they found out my wife and I don't plan on having any kids.

Can you show me this on the quiverfull site? I know many who are of that same mentality and it is not about "having as many children as possible" because, after all, the Bible doesn't say how much a full quiver is. For some, it may be 2 children. For others, it's 15. I'd like to see the quote that says to have as many children as possible and to throw all personal responsibility to the wind.

Why is it testing God to have relations with your spouse and possibly have children? I did fertility treatments and had 10 good eggs release one cycle and did not get pregnant. Every single factor was perfect from what the fertility specialists said, but God still chose to not allow us to get pregnant that month. Can you show me in Scripture where God commends someone for preventing a pregnancy? Can you show me where God tells someone to be careful about how many children they have? I'd love to see it.

There is quite the over reaction with regards to the Duggars.

A "quiver full" of children is poetic language, first and foremost. It is not to be taken literally...as a quiver full would mean every family would need a minimum of 12 children (quivers hold between 12 - 20 arrows...I'm a former archer). Two would never be considered full.
The testing comes in when one believes since God is in charge of opening and closing the womb (also taken out of context to support the movement), He will plan the size of the family in spite of fertility cycles. If you have relations during a fertile period, God has designed it that you will most likely get pregnant (I know there are individual exceptions...but the Duggars are quite fertile, apparently). If you know the apparent outcome of a situation, and do it anyway while basically telling God "it's on you", that is testing, not trusting. If I decide to smoke a pack a day...I'm most likely going to get cancer. If I eat a diet high in saturated fats...I'm most likely going to have heart problems. If I drink a lot of alcohol...I'm most likely going to get drunk. For each action, there is a result. The result of having unprotected s*x during a fertile time means you will most likely get pregnant. It's tempting God to say if you don't want me to get pregnant, I won't.

Did you know the chances of becoming pregnant in any menstrual cycle is 20%? That doesn't mean that in-tercourse (broken for searches) during ovulation equals a baby. As I said, we were in fertility treatments, I took high power drugs, had 10 eggs release, post-coi-tal test was perfect...and I didn't become pregnant.

No where in Scripture are we told to take control of our fertility. As a matter of fact, the laws that God gave to the Israelites (that Gothard is trying to follow - the no intimacy during 7 days of menstruation and 7 days afterwards being a biggie) usually guaranteed intimacy in times of fertility. I wonder why God would arrange that? I know we're not under the law at all but I do find an interesting principle there behind it.

Again, if one were to truly follow the way God designed us when we have children, the vast majority of children will be spaced about 2 years apart. I do think the Duggars play with that a bit to insure that her fertility returns early, although her statement about still nursing her 8 month old shows that she DOES nurse longer than what I was told (6 months) but I'm not sure how much she is nursing her 8 month old. Nursing twice a day will most likely insure the return of her fertility but I've not heard how often she's nursing.

Scripture tells over and over and over again that we are responsible for our own actions. There is nothing in scripture to suggest procreative choices are exempt. Gothard's implication is that those who take responsibility over their procreative choices are sinning. That's a clear perversion of scripture.

And as long as those having the children take care of them, feed and clothe them and raise them in the way they should go, what does it matter to anyone else how many they have?

I'm not speaking of Gothard because he's a nutcase. I'm speaking of the idea of allowing God to control fertility.

There a lot of things that are a perversion of scripture. But it does not make them a cult or cult like.

Gothard's scriptural application is a perversion, regardless of how many children a person has, and regardless of whether they're taken care of.
As Christians God being in control is an imperative. But Scripture tells us over and over and over again that we are responsible for our own actions. If one stops taking responsibility for one's one procreative decisions, in the name of "having God take control", that's a bad misapplication of scripture. It's like saying I'm not going get my broken leg set because God is in control of my healing.
    You have a point there.

I don't call it takeing care of properly when a child does not have access to their parents and has to make an appointment to talk to mom. No way this woman takes care of that many children on her own, meaning her older children hare having to raise someone elses kids. it is called taking care of children when you actually take care of your own children, not hand them off.

As I stated earlier, I also have my older children help with my younger children (as a matter of fact, I'm at church right now setting up the Sunday service and some other work and my 17 year old is home watching the younger children). There's nothing wrong with it and any family with more than 1 child does the same thing.

I also have had my children make "appointments" with me to talk about something that really needs uninterrupted time. I don't see anything wrong with that. As a matter of fact, we scheduled an appointment with my children last night to give them some news about something very important that will be happening in our ministry/family. We didn't just grab them as they were doing schoolwork or texting but made a time that we would have each other's undivided attention.

I don't see that as wrong.

I know the Duggars have their kids make an appointment to discuss something with mom, and I don't have a problem with that at all. I do, however, have a problem with that being the only time during the week that they can talk to mom. I would not want to raise my kids like that.

By the way, I have 2 kids, and my quivver is full! I have a small quivver.

I don't think that those are the only times that the kids can talk to mom. On the few times I've watched the show, I've seen the kids discussing things with their parents all the time. It's called "life".

My quiver seems to be 4 on earth and 2 in heaven. :) I tried for more, trust me, but now I'm getting old and I'm happy with what we have.

It's a TV show, meaning they are actors, meaning it is not real life...it's editing.
