My other radio has a digital tuner, and that is a nice feature.

Let me know when you get your new radio, and I'll do the same when my Sangean gets here. Can't wait. Have to have something to do while laid up all the time!

SW DXing is fun, but I used to enjoy MW (AM Band) DXing even more. However, with the advent of syndicated programming and the Clear Channel Communications behemoth, it is all the same everywhere. I have a Sangean CCRadio from C. Crane Company and love it. I also understand the GE SuperRadio II is extremely good for AM DXers.

I bought a GE SuperRadio and I was disappointed. My problem is I believe the hype about products (especially radios) and they never live up to the advertising. I love listening to radio, espcially SW, but AM too. This sounds silly, but for the reason you mentioned (the same programs everywhere) I have really taken to listening to sporting events (like baseball games. It is a real charge to be looking around the dial and pull in the Nashville Sounds or the Cleveland Indians. For some reason in the winter, I can listen to many of the Dallas Mavericks games. I grew up listening to Cubs games everyday, so I am one of those who prefers to "see it on the radio".

Mark, a bit off topic, but what is the story about HCJB? I have been out of the SW listening hobby for about 10 years now. Is HCJB not broadcasting anymore on SW? Or did you mean that they changed frequencies and wouldn't be broadcasting on 15.155khz? Just curious.

    Thanks,
    Michael

HCJB has stopped their English serivce to North America and Europe. I think they still have AM English in South America. And they still have SW broadcasts in other languages, and they are still having an morning English broadcast, but haven't caught it yet. It is at 15155, but it is not HCJB originated programs, it is the programs you can hear on US Christian stations. The broadcasts start at 6AM eastern.

Explain to me how UTC works relative to the day of the week. Certain times set the day back/forward?

UTC is the same thing as Greenwich Mean Time. IF you have a radio, you can hear UTC on 10000, 15000, and 20000 KHz. (tic toc tic toc, at the tone, 0 hours 23 minutes coordinated universal time.......BEEP) They say you can hear it on 5000 as well; however, I have never heard it.

DXing is something that is near and dear to my heart. I started as a kid [in Knoxville, TomVols!!] when my Dad bought me a build-it-yourself shortwave radio (a very crude one at that). I tuned in on 6000 KHz and heard Radio Havana. I was hooked.

Although it drives my wife crazy, I have a ton or radios. My pride and joy is my Drake R8B - which is quite expensive. My portable is a Grundig YB400PE, which goes with me everywhere.

Hey Mark: I am not a big fan of that particular Grundig, but that is not a bad price at all.
I used to have a Sangean: I bought it on ebay cheap, and sold it on ebay for a $30 profit. ;)

Tom, since you are in LaFollette, you should string up a copper wire, if you haven't already done it.

Yeah, I've heard it on 5000 and I think 7000? But how does it affect the day? I've heard that this is why you may not hear a program on the date in question.

Oops, I forgot about the 7000 broadcast.....
I have never heard of the issue you raise. Personally, I have never had problems with hearing something broadcast at a specific UTC time. This is simply GMT.

    I will check around though.

I miss living in Florida: the ocean was the best shortwave antenna. From the beach in St. Augustine, I was listening to the BBC broadcast to Africa. I also heard Iranian radio informing me that I was an infidel.

The most obsure stations I ever got were Radio Abu Dhabi (who sent in incredible QSL card) and LA VOZ del CID, Cuban pirate station against Castro. It was in Spanish and when I wrote they read it over the air and I got about 20 letters from people in Cuba asking if they could come live with me!

Yeah, we need to exchange some finds on here. Maybe we can get to the point where we'll need our own DX forum!

Sounds good! I have no idea about the frequency of CID, it was 10 years ago, but interesting. We've got Bible Time this week, so gotta go. Best hunting!

Also you can hear the time via `the "Universal Atomic Clock" at 5000, 10000 and 15000 on your shortwave dial. If you hear a man's voice you are hearing Boulder, Colorado, if you hear a woman's voice, you are picking up Hawaii.
