If anyone is in the TX/AR/LA/OK area, and are interested in old shape note religious folk music (or if you would enjoy a day or two of almost non-stop singing), I would like to invite you to the EAST TEXAS SACRED HARP SINGING CONVENTION - Community Center @ South High & Fairpark, Henderson, Texas, August 9 & 10, 9:30 a.m. til 2:30 a.m. Continental breakfast & lunch are provided, plus there will be a Saturday night informal gathering which includes a light supper and opportunities for more singing, socializing, or recreation. Come see us.

For more information, directions, etc. private message me. For more info on Sacred Harp - The Sacred Harp Home Page and Sacred Harp Singing in Texas.

Man, I wish I could go... it sounds like a great time of worship! Unfortunately, I'm booked this weekend. But thanks for the invite! Let us know how it goes!

Yes. That sounds different. I think I would have enjoyed it.

Wish it was closer to me.

Joshua, we'll be in College Station the last weekend of February. That's not very far from you. Keep us in mind.

I'll try to remember to remind you when it gets closer. In the meantime, here are a couple of references you might wish to consult:
    Sacred Harp FAQ
    Annual & Monthly Singings

We had a wonderful time in Henderson. There were approximately 200 singers, with about 80 who took turns leading the congregation each day (one at a time of course). In addition to local singers, we had visitors from Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois and other places. Wish you could have been there.

Sounds like fun! I've been to the Seattle Sacred Harp a couple times, but haven't been able to participate fully because I'm just not a nimble enough sight-reader (shaped or otherwise) and I don't know the fasola bit at all. But even just to listen to, it's a treat. Now that I have wife who sings, maybe we'll try it together.

ALL DAY SINGING AND DINNER ON THE GROUND

Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church will host an "all-day" Sacred Harp singing Saturday October 4th. Singing will begin at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. The singing will be from the 1992/2000 W. M. Cooper Revision of The Sacred Harp (originally published in 1844), and is performed "singing school" style - a cappella, and the syllables ("fa,sol,la") are sung before singing the words. The church building is located in Rusk County, Texas, about 5 miles west of Mt. Enterprise on FM 2496. Everyone invited. Come and experience it for yourself.
