Ken Taylor was the man responsible for the Living Bible paraphrase. It's my understanding the New Living Translation (NLT) is much more accurate than its predecessor because the team that worked on the NLT didn't seek to paraphrase an already-existing translation as Taylor had done.

I'm not a huge fan of the gender-inclusive style of the TNIV, so if I want a less formal translation without the gender-inclusive wording I normally use the NIV.

I'm reading through the ESV this year. So far I've been neither overly impressed nor overly disappointed with the translation. I do part of my reading out of the printed Crossway Classic Reference edition while part of my reading is done online. I've also heard of poor quality and materials in the printed Crossway Bibles, but so far I've had no problem.

The translations I would most recommend are the NKJV, the NASBs and - yep, the KJVs. But those are my personal preferences - not rocket science.

I like the ESV translation and have been using my ESV hard-cover for about 2 1/2 years now.

I am now at the point that I have to stop carrying this particular Bible to church. It is literally falling apart. First, the thin plastic Saran wrap covering over the hard covers started bubbling up and peeling away. Now the back cover along with the maps in the back have separated themselves completely from the rest of the book.

I used to carry an Old Scofield. Say what you will about the notes, but the quality of those bibles was tops. ESV needs to find a publisher who will put out a quality book.

Priscilla Ann - I love my ESV and if you're name is correct and you're a woman (I have no clue why a man would use a handle of Priscilla Ann but I've seen some weird things online - LOL), I have a recommendation for you. I bought an ESV from Amazon and the cover is really nice - pretty even - and it's a very comfortable size and feel Bible. The quality is very good and the pages are heavy enough that I'm not bleeding through the page when I mark it up. The print is easy enough for me to read (I'm 43 and don't need reading glasses except for the tiniest of print) and it has the center reference passages.

Here's the link to my Bible for just over $20:

In looking this one up, I see it also comes in sky blue for under $20 - very pretty color!

I see that the Scofield bible is available in the ESV translation; perhaps I will check out that possibility. I see that the Scofield is published by another company...Oxford University Press. Maybe their quality is better than Crossway's.

    I will look at those.

The Crossway ESV bible that I saw recently had very thin pages, and the bleed-thru was so distracting that it was difficult to read.

Oxford University Press has been the Scofield publisher for many years. If you follow the procedures they give you for breaking the book in, it should last a while.

Of course I don't exclude this as having an application to all Christians both male and female. I think 99% of the population is smart enough to understand that "brothers" "mankind" and such references apply to both genders. If I am wrong about how smart the Bible reading public is and there really are some people who are simple enough that they don't think such references apply to females, perhaps a footnote could be added to clear the problem up.

What I do very much have a problem with is adding to the text proper of the Word of God for ANY reason regardless of how noble the motive may seem. The Bible itself warns against such tampering more than once. If we really believe that the Bible is the Word of God we have no business editing it to suit our human wishes or desires. That is just my opinion based on my understanding of Scripture, but I stand firm of that issue.

I really like that TruTone stuff, not sure what it is or how it is made, but it looks and feels very nice.
