Greece, which had never won a match at a major soccer tournament until three weeks ago, beat host nation Portugal 1-0 with a goal from Angelos Charisteas to claim the European Championship.

The Werder Bremen striker, who scored just four goals in 24 games for his German club last season, headed his third goal of the 16-team tournament past goalkeeper Ricardo after 57 minutes at Lisbon's Stadium of Light. It was Greece's only shot on target and came from its only corner.

Greece, a 100/1 longshot at U.K. bookmaker Ladbrokes before the start of the tournament, was a 5/2 underdog to win the match at the 65,000-seat venue. The result caps a tournament in which the sport's traditional powerhouses such as Germany and Italy exited in the first round, while defending champion France lost to Greece in the quarterfinal.

Greece, which lost three matches at the 1994 World Cup and managed one draw at Europe's showpiece in 1980, defeated Portugal for the second time in three weeks.
