And that was about the time the term Fundamentalist picked up KJVO, and other things...

He was a Fundamental... But the definition changed on him...

Today (as we can see reading back through this thread) unless you are KJVO and hate CCM. you are not a fundamentalist in America.
What a job Satan did in attacking fundamentalism... by adding two of his doctrines... and making people think they are in the Bible.

Which is ironic considering the true fundamentalists require a doctrine to be found in the Bible before it is a fundamental..
But since the movement has been hijacked by KJVOs.. no longer is it required.

KJVO is not in the Bible, therefore it cannot be a fundamental of the Bible.

And unless the movement gets back to it's old paths of requiring it's doctrine to be found in the Bible, fundamentalism as it is defined today will be destroyed by God... (NOT true fundamentalism.. as was found in "The Fundamentals"... that my friends will stand the test of time)...but the farce that is imitating fundamentalism..
Some fundamentalists will be surprised when we get to Heaven, and Jesus says, "open your NIVs"... (MAYBE)

I am fundamental as it relates to the fundamentals... But don't anyone dare call me a "fundamentalist" today... There is too much extrabiblical baggage in the definition today.

    Tinytim,

I agree with you that Falwell moved away from KJV fundamentalist..or they moved away from him. However, there are fundamentalists who are decidedly NOT KJV, and Falwell moved away from them as well. Fundamentalism in not monolithic and KJV only types are not the only fundamentalists. In fact, as you may be saying, they probably are not fundamentalists at all.

Jerry Falwell was a visionary. He did what he thought he should do and did not subject himself or his church to an outside human entity. His ministry is arguably bigger and more influential today than any of the fundamentalists he left behind.

Tiny, you and I have discussed this before, right? I never ever said KJVO is in the Bible. It is MY preference, based on what I have been taught for over 50 years (by my Southern Baptist deacon father and many SBC pastors, and now my IFB Pastors) and that is this: the King James is the closest CORRECT translation to the Greek text. I don't NEED any other version, and I certainly don't want any transliterations shoved in front of me and then be told that they are better than my KJV. End of discussion..... No other version thrills me, inspires me, or makes sense to me.

I left the SBC because it changed with the times, it became more worldly and less scripturally focused, and I wanted a church like I grew up in...and that is the IFB church. Falwell accepted modernization, and although his basic doctrine didn't change, he molded his school and his church around the glamour and the hype, and this is sad. God calls us to be seperate from the world, not to melt into it.

And it a preacher cannot preach about SIN and DEATH, then how can a person know that they are lost? God isn't all fluff and soft. He is JUST. If that burns a sinner's ears, so be it.

Jerry Falwell was (and his successors currently still are) scripturally sound. His preferences and powerful message went south, that's all. Jonathan Falwell's messages are eloquent, but they don't convict.

    Good.

It's God's job to convict, not the preacher's.

And BTW...God is working there. A friend of mine's son was saved a few weeks ago at that church.

Sadly, a truth I did not learn until well after I left the IFB college that I was trained at.

D, I don't remember having this discussion...could have though.. I am getting older, and my memory is going.. :tongue3: (Can I blame it on my age? :wavey: )But I agree with most of what you wrote...

I just have a problem with IFBs adding KJVO to their dogmatic beliefs...
I grew up IFB.. and I never seen a church with "KJV 1611" as an advertisement on their sign until the mid 90s...

NOW, most every IFB church I know in WV is KJVO... or is being pressured to be.

I don't have a problem with anyone being KJVO.. as long as they use the Bible!.. But I do have a problem with a whole subset of Baptists declaring that their doctrines are fundamental to the Christian faith and the Bible. and adding a doctrine that is not even hinted at in the Bible..

Why, Jesus himself didn't use the Masoretic text... (as is proven from his quoting the LXX in the KJV) Jesus wouldn't even be allowed to read outloud...in a KJVO church. NOW that is a problem.

So, Falwell was fundamental... a true fundamental.. the fake ones are the ones of today that have added stuff to the fundamentals...

Used to be I loved to read the SOTL.. Now, ... well lets just say I miss JRR!

Absolutely. I don't know about adding, but I see a lot taking away and glossing over the real truth. Rick Warren is a prime example....Laodecian preacher! Give into the world, don't mention sin and the penalty for it....God loves everybody and no mention of our turning our back on God's commandments... Mr. Warren, the wages of sin is DEATH!!!

Sad, I know a lot of people that have tuned in to the fluffy palatable soft version of Christianity just so they don't look fanatical or fundamental.

I went through 40 days of purpose and RW is not easy on sin.. He does promote the Gospel...

Apparently you have been brainwashed by the RW haters....

Besides that I thought he was pastor of Saddleback.. not Laodicea.. ( I KNOW< I KNOW.. you apparently have fallen into the false doctrine that the 7 churches are church ages... .another thing fundies don't have Bible to back)

Amen! I am with you.
A friend of mine shared with me about his experience at LU where he attended and left. He told me many negative details about LU campus.

Well, I agree with you, that is true and is sad.

However, I also know a lot of people who have added to the scripture and created oppressive laws that they bind about people's necks. These people add to the gospel claiming that without a legalistic following of their ordinances salvation is not genuine. They bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders.

These men and women are not fundamentalists at all but are modern Pharisees more concerned with the works of men's hands and the outward appearance then the heart and mind.

Thank God he left. Makes room for someone who is really serious about learning instead of having someone who knows it all taking up space.

Well, I say this to those who don't agree with us.....It is better to serve God than man. Peter took his eyes off of Christ and he sank.

So are you implying that those of us that don't agree with you and askjo are serving Man and not God? That is a very heavy charge, and puts you and askjo into the realm of playing God.

I serve God.. although I use the NIV, NET, NASB, KJV, NKJV, and many more...
I serve God although I listen to Casting Crowns, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, etc....

I serve God although I dont ascribe to beliefs just because I grew up with them...
At one point I myself had to define what I believed.. not just take on my daddy's belief, or my grandparents belief...

I really hope you 2 are not questioning my salvation because I don't add to the traditional fundamentals of the church by accepting the unorthodox doctrines of onlyism or anti-CCM.

But it comes across as that.

I have never found someone who comes to church who is a non-Christian ever tell me they could not handle what I said and were not challenged. Many times they were provoked to think about their relationship with God. When I talked about the price the early christians paid for following Christ it grabbed their attention.

The people I always had problems with, were the "pagan" Christians who were not obedient vessels. They would sneer and make comments audible to people listening. Too many times they were little Satans feeling uncomfotable and so they showed their fangs. After one of the services a deacon/music leader came at me and tried to hit me. He was very angry. I spoke on gossip and the problem was exposed. I realized at that moment who was creating me trouble.

One never knows what will trigger a response leading to salvation. I know that ultimately it is the word of God. It is, however, sometimes something silly.

We shouldn't be so quick to criticize so many just because they don't do things our way.

    Cheers,

    Jim
