I had always believed that helping the poor was a personal deal or through the church. Many have had the poor in their homes from a few days to a few years to help them.
We all are free to give up part to all of our wealth to help others.
Also I haven't check this out in a few year, but the right wing GOP types give more to charity than our friends to the left or that was what I found out a few years ago. As my father use to say, some talk and some do, some do with their money others do with others money.

Really, CTB? You are equating the federal government with Jesus Christ? You are equating the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 with using other people's monies to call yourself miraculously benevolent?

If you want to use a Biblical reference, then let's discuss the early church sharing of their resources with those who had nothing. People brought what they had and shared it.

CTB, you just can't win with these loving Christians at the BB. Don't you know that it's up to these stingy Christians to feed the poor, and it's definitely not the job of the government. Let them eat cake!

My grandparents made use of Meal On Wheels. It was a God-send. I don't want anyone's Meals On Wheels to expire.

This thread isn't about helping the poor.

It's about bashing Republicans - likening them to the devil and likening Democrats to Jesus Christ.

If this thread really WERE about helping feed the poor, then we could have a profitable discussion and not resorting to calling people names.

Of course not. I am saying that I do not believe God approves of increasing a budget to buy weapons while cutting funding to feed the elderly and poor.

Tough subject. In some sense budgets are moral indicators. People are in need of food and security, where do we draw the lines?

    At the Constitution!

One purpose of the govt is to protect us!
It is not the job of the (federal) govt to take care of social needs. That is (should be) the responsibility of social agcys and churches.

and don't always blame the DOD for spending money. Sometimes a Congressman votes to spend money for votes.

The left is more concerned about the belly than the soul. It is an old story. Most Americans are well fed. Jesus provided lunch one day for the crowd.

It is not the government's job to provide everything. It is God's job.

Obama is not God, although he seems to think he is.

I doubt seriously that Jesus would agree. We are to take care of social needs, personally, through civic organizations, through our churches, and through the government. I would prefer that a larger amount of the taxes I pay go to help people.

Yes the Army does not need the tanks. But you can bet there are other items or research they want that same money spent on. I am not condemning them for this.

    Like Meals on Wheels.

As the US is a democracy it is a moral reflection on the entire country as to how tax money is spent.

    What scripture would support this?

How is a child supposed to provide food for themselves? Should they not have to worry about meals? Yes, but reality is there are more then we would like to see, that worry about this each and everyday.

Not very Christian of us to theorize ourselves into a position where we don't have to do anything. Of all the things government could be spending money on I could think of a lot worse things then food for hungry people.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John ... in other words, the way Jesus lived his life and the way he treated people .... also the scene of the Last Judgement in Matthew.

I don't have a problem with helping the poor. I DO, however, have a problem with the government forcibly taking MY money and "helping the poor" their way, on their terms, with their definition of "poor." It's easy to help others when you're using other people's money.

I think what makes a difference is this: What are YOU doing to help those around you who are hungry? Do you personally donate to the food bank? Remember that next Saturday, May 11th (my birthday, by the way so do it as a gift for me?), the post office will be collecting food at your mailbox to bring to local food pantries so you don't even have to leave your home!!

Do you bring food to a family that is in need?

What is your church doing to help those who find themselves in need?

I don't believe it's the government's job to do what *I* should be doing.

Are you suggesting that each person who pays taxes gets to designate how their money gets spent? We live with a representative government, not sure exactly how that would work, if it could even work.

Well said! The government is not God. The problem in the USA is the government's mishandling of the economy by overspending, overprinting money, etc., that has resulted in all this unemployment.

    Thanks, Mexdeaf! Best wishes!

That would be nice, wouldn't it?

It gets really, really old, hearing if you don't hand out money like candy, you're mean, you're starving old people and children, you're a bad Christian, blah, blah, blah. If our politicians TRULY cared about the poor and hungry, THEY would set the example by giving THEMSELVES pay and benefit cuts. Sure, the democrats want to feed the hungry, but they'll do it with your money, not theirs.

How many paid vacations has our president taken? How much money has he WASTED taking along dozens and dozens of people on these pleasure "trips?"
