I heard that same blurb about Wal-Mart and Sam's Club limiting the amount of rice.

For years they've been paying farmers not to grow certain crops, I guess now those farmers will have to work to earn money and actually grow those crops.

There is no food rationing going on. this has been blown out of proportion.

I have agreed with that from the beginning of this type of discussion.

The varieties of rice in short supply are imported varieties (e.g. jasmine and basmati). American grown rice is plentiful. However, the American varieties (grown in California and Arkansas) are not normally used in Asian cusines.

Yes, it is being blown out of proportion and it sure doesn't help much when the local or national newspapers start blaring everything on the front pages which in turn, starts mass stampeding to Sam's, Costco, Wallieworld, etc. I happened to be out shopping today. Prices seemed to be holding steady as far as I could tell; people certainly weren't beating me around the head to grab the bag of rice I was considering, although I did notice that a loaf of bread has gone up in 1 week to $5.00 a loaf. Predictions are that that's going to increase by summer to $10.00 for a loaf of bread. Oh well, good way to start learning to diet or become vegetarian :D

Bread is $.99 here at save a lot, just over $1. at wal mart. Using food crops for biofuels is going to be a problem.
And our local salvage store always has plenty of rice, sometimes those great big bags, for about $3.00
I've been seeing grocery prices going up a little at a time for a while now, and I'm sure they'll go even higher. But I think we're a ways from rationing.
I saw on the news the other night an interview with a manager from costco who said he was low on rice right now, but he could order more. Meaning it is available.

Might be a fore-taste of things to come. Time will tell.

No, just making a comment. There are signs however of harder times ahead for many in our world. Of course we in the USA have been quite spoiled. The government has operated on a cheap food policy for years, but it seems that is running its course.

Rev. did you grow up on a farm? or in a town/city?

I also. That being the case you should be aware of the cheap food policy the gov. has followed for years and the danger signs that are now raising their ugly heads.

I remember rationing during WW II. There were shortages and, of course, there was good reason for that being true at that time. The reasons for shortages appearing now are quite different, but apparent nevertheless. We raised a big garden and canned almost all the vegetables we ate. I wish I had a penny for every pea I shelled from pods for my Mom to can.

Perhaps people need to start turning their back yards into gardens. Quite a lot of food can be grown on a small plot of land.

I dont really understand what your point was. Not being sarcastic just stating a fact. But we are shipping much of our grown food over seas. If a shortage were to actuallyt happen it would be a result of that. But there is no current reason for a food shortage scare in the States.

Bread was still $.99 today. I don't what kind of bread a person has to be buying for it to cost $5. a loaf.

    THE PENNY & the KJV

Revelation 6:5-6 (KJV1611 Edition): And when hee had opened the third seale,
I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld,
and loe, a blacke horse: and hee that sate on him
had a paire of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the foure beastes say,
A measure of wheate for a penie,
and three measures of barley for a penie,
and see thou hurt not the oyle and the wine.

In 1611 the penny (a British copper coin about the size of our 2008 quarter) was a day's wages. In 96AD, when the Greek was written, the 'denarion' was a day's wages (a Greek silver coin abut the size of our 2007 penny).

So this scripture is predicting a time of famine.
You can barely feed your family (a day's wages for a day's food)
OR you can barely feed your live stock (a day's wages for
the barley for the animals). So you have to choose between
feeding your family now or in the future.
Forget anything more than the basics, like oil or wine :(

(BTW, 'beast' here is a good being so really should read
    'living being'.)

Our local family-owned grocery is selling honey wheat bread for $4 a loaf. It used to be $1.89, then went up to $2.49, and now is $4. Not that it bothers me. I've been cooking and baking from scratch (including bread) ever since gas hit $3.50 here. Now gas here is up to $3.69 a gallon.
