Just more evidence why it won't surprise me if Thompson never actually jumps into the race. I have serious doubts that he has the fire in the belly for it.

Fred's funds raise fear of flop

Fred Thompson plans to announce Tuesday that his committee to test the waters for a Republican presidential campaign raised slightly more than $3 million in June, substantially less than some backers had hoped, according to Republican sources.

Thompson plans to make the disclosure in a filing with the Internal Revenue Service, as he continues to operate his prospective campaign as a political organization that does not require disclosure to the Federal Election Commission.

Many Republicans had seen the “Law & Order” actor and former U.S. senator from Tennessee as a potential savior in a tough election cycle....

Some are already saying a prospective Thompson run is a flop. “I just don’t see it anymore,” said a key Republican who had been extremely enthusiastic about a Thompson candidacy.

"That number is really underwhelming. There were indications it could be double that. They've been saying that people were waiting for Fred, and the money was going to pour in. He looks like he's already losing momentum."

The adviser said the figure was enough for Thompson to hire some staff, do some travel and work on his policy initiatives. “It’s not going to be a huge number for a presidential campaign. It’s a testing-the-waters-type number. The number will reflect that goal. He hasn’t been campaigning. He’s been talking to people about whether that figure is the direction he definitely wants to go.”

Republican sources say Thompson has a full-time staff of 30, split between offices in McLean, Va., and Nashville, Tenn., which will be the formal headquarters. In addition, he has interns and volunteers.

A Thompson aide said the former senator is as enthusiastic as ever. “It’s full speed ahead,” the aide said. “Sen. Thompson spent last week traveling the country, meeting with supporters and Fredheads. He was met with great enthusiasm everywhere he went and he’s feeling great.”

Do you think that this is more a function of the fact that he hasn't announced his candidacy? IMO, the money will pour in if he announces. More and more it seems that he could be heir apparent. Moreover, if you see Karl Rove sign onto the campaign, he will win the nomination.

One article said he hasn't announced yet because of the "equal-time" provisions of the campaign and their possible conflicts with the Law and Order reruns and the problems that would cause the networks who want to run them and the actors who receive money from their airings. Thus, the Fall (when the new TV cycle begins) is now the supposed date.

Ken , I can tell that you are clearly disappointed that Thompson is doing well and might eventually capture the White House over the lesser figures .

If Thompson announces I think all reruns in which he appears cannot be shown on any network - over-the-air or cable or satellite.

I really don't care who the GOP sacrificial lamb is in the 2008 presidential race.

Correct. If they do, then I believe "equal time" must be given to each candidate....a headache the tv networks do not want.

Nah, if Thompson runs, picks up Rudy as the VP and Rove as his advisor, he will win in 2008.

I don't think so, BiR. I see Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next president of these United States with Barack Obama as the next vice president of these United States.

Obama won't be VP. He's there to make Hillary look like she can overcome obstacles. Hillary will pick someone nobody has ever heard of.

Maybe Harold Ford, Jr. would be an option for Hillary, if he can shake off his family troubles and inability to win despite last year's backlash against the GOP. A young southern minority would be appealing to her and to the party, I would think.

Hillary has no chance - far too polarizing to be elected. I think that John Edwards poses the biggest threat, which may explain why Limbaugh has a fixation with him that is beginning to rival his fixation on former President Bill Clinton (still has a long way to go though).

Hey TomVols, did you notice that West Park Baptist Church is advertising on the BaptistBoard? That surprised me. I have seen Temple Baptist Church (out in Powell) and Crown College on the board, but I had not seen WPBC.

Disagree with you, but you make an interesting point.

BTW, I sold my Trek ATB and went to look at the Cannondales. I opted for a Scott as it seemed capable of taking more abuse. I was thinking about you on my test ride with the Cannondale. Their road bikes are SWEET, but I cannot really justify upgrading my roadie as well.

Hope all is well in Big Sky Country,
    BiR

Nope. Can't mountain bike now, due to all the fires, you'll end up hyperventilating wood smoke. We'll get some cooling next week, & some much needed rain, but this has been an awful July. Fishing has also been restricted, due to water temps.

FDT sure can't pick a campaign manager.....Spencer Abraham????? The La Raza shill?

No, no, no, no, no, the point is to have an anti-Hillary, not another open borders freak. With Mel Martinez as RNC Chairman, that's the recipie for defeat, cover and simmer until 11/08.

You're right, "Bro. Curtis", she supposedly doesn't even like him all that much and he brings zilch on the ticket - there's enough dead Chicagoans that will vote for her anyways. She will go with somebody from a redder state - Vilsack, Bayh, or Richardson - Ford is too "tainted" by scandal.

And all these people here saying "Hillary can't win"...sure she can - that's what they said in New York in 2000, with sky-high negatives and all.

Load up those Cannondales and come to Virginia. I have several rides for us. Since you actually have mountains (not the foothills we have) we will take you to the beach to ride. I might even let you ride my Scott......

A genuine wish for God's Blessings on you and your family,
