JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel suspended all security contacts with the Palestinians and sealed off biblical Bethlehem in a West Bank clampdown on Monday after gunmen killed three settlers in the deadliest attack on Israelis in months.

Israel also killed a senior Islamic militant in the flare-up in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, a month after the Jewish state completed its pullout from the Gaza Strip to end 38 years of military rule there.

The violence stirred new doubts about an already shaky eight-month-old ceasefire declared by militants and undermined hopes the Gaza pullout would spur renewed peacemaking.....

Did anyone other than our fearless leadership think the peace for land deal would produce peace? How stupid.

Actually, yes, they did. Let's see: There was Ariel Sharon (the leader of Israel), there was the majority of Israeli people who supported the Israeli government. The story is not over yet and we will see if Sharon can disarm the terrorists and bring about democratic and human rights reforms among the Palestinians. If not, then Bibi might actually have a good shot of being the next PM.

I am glad that the Israeli people are giving peace a chance, especially for the sake of the Israeli and Palestinian children. It would be stupid not to do so.

President Bush and Secretary of State Rice are correct to support the Israeli people in this effort.

It was President Bush's idea, along with the other three members of the Quartet (UN, Russia, and EU), Ken - called the Road Map, as we have discussed many times before. The idea did not originate with Mr. Sharon.

The SOS is the spokesperson for her boss and carries out his agenda.

The Road Map was supported by both the majority of the Israeli people and the government. I support Israel, and I am not even a pre-miller. :D

It's okay, though. God's gonna fix it.

I certainly hope it is God's will that a two State solution will bring peace to that region for the Israelis and the Palestinians, especially for the sake of their children. Otherwise I don't see any other way for peace to come to that region in the long term.

A two state solution will do nothing but embolden the Palestinians further.

There will be no peace no matter what mankind does, until the Lord's return.

I find it disturbing that Israel caves in to pressure from the US to bargain off land, which is a tangible asset, for peace which is not only intangible but impossible there, now.

Here's a different take on the issue. Worth the read.

In any other country, settlements in which only Jews are allowed to live, connected by roads that non-Jews are forbidden to use, would be cited as an example of discrimination, if not racism. Israel, however, is the grand exception to America's morality and ethics. It does as it pleases, and the American government bows in assent, protects it from U.N. sanctions and writes annual checks that would be the envy of any charity in the world.

So what does this mean for us? Well, it means that one of the core causes of terrorism will not be solved. Terrorism is a low-grade military response to political problems. Until the political problems are resolved, there is no hope of ending terrorism. Palestinians are not going anywhere, and they are never going to accept as permanent the status of dogs in a poorly run kennel.

It's difficult for Americans to realize the despair, frustration, humiliation and hardships that the Israelis impose on the Palestinians, who are innocent of anything except being born in the land of their ancestors – land that is coveted by the Israelis. Palestinians long ago recognized Israel's right to exist, but there will be no peace, and no end of terrorism, until the Israelis recognize the Palestinians' right to a state of their own.
