The godless left like to rewrite history, sometimes called revisionist history, to denigrate our Republic, especially its founding on Christian principles.

One line of attack has been to proclaim many of the founding fathers were "deists." The claim went on to say that Mr. Washington believed in the "watchmaker" god, who created the universe but let it run without god's intervention. Obviously, like most of what is proclaimed from godlessness, the claim is false.

George did indeed seldom refer to the "Persons" of God, referring instead to "Providence" or "Heaven." But he repeatedly gave credit to "Providence" for his survival in battle, such as when two of his horses were shot out from under him and it the same engagement, two more musket balls ripped through his hat. Not to mention his daily practice to spending about one hour in prayer and meditation "on his knees" with an open bible in front of him.

So how should we understand his "religion?"

He certainly did not engage in discussions of the "finer points of theology" thinking them to arise from speculation rather than revelation. He took to heart about avoiding ostentatious displays of religiosity. He was not like Mr. Clinton, who carried a large bible to church. George engaged in charity anonymously.

Mr. George Washington was much more the publican than the pharisee.
