    How does everyone feel about "healing by the laying on of hands and prayer by the Elders"?
    I am not talking about the Benny Henn type of thing but I am talking about the power of prayer by the Elders?

    James, chapter 5
    14": Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

    "15": And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

    "16": Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

    If so, give us some of your examples.

    I believe in healing, and prayer for healing, but I haven't decided if laying on hands is necessary for healing to happen, it happens all the time without it.

    donnA;

    Acts, chapter 28
    "8": And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

    Hebrews, chapter 6
    "1": Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

    "2": Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

    "3": And this will we do, if God permit.

    Luke, chapter 4
    "40": Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them

    Mark, chapter 5
    "23": And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

    We do have Scripture for it.

    I have wondered about this and have thought about trying to heal my back which has some really cool looking hardware in it.

    I know that faith can do wonders when it comes to medicine and attitude has everything to do with healing. However how much has the state of today's world effected peoples faith? I don't mean faith in God but Faith in miracles. How many people can generate perfect faith in God healing them when so many doctors have failed? Belief in Science today takes so much faith that it tends to go twards it and away from God.

    I could be way off but its worth thinking about maybe.

    Oh, you are right Kilad;
    Almost everyone goes to the doctor first and God as last resort. I can assure that healing by faith and the laying on of hands does indeed work if the faith is true and in the right place. The laying on of hands does not do the healing but the Lord Himself through prayer and the laying on of hands. Please don't compare what I am talking about to something like Benny Henn for we do not make a show of it, most times it is done just the two of you, but it does work. This is just one instance; one of my members was on kidney dialysis for at least seven years. One day he asked if I would lay hands on him and pray of which I did. He was taken off the dialysis and doctor ask him what had happened and he told him about the prayer. I also had another man who had a growth in his head which was growing by the day. I laid hands on him and prayed and in two days the growth fell out like sawdust. If you have never experienced it I am sure you will find it hard to believe but "the bible tells us so".
    I don't get an answer everytime for it just don't work that way. I remember Hezekiah and how his life was extended fifteen years.

    Oh wow those are fantastic stories. I love hearing stories where faith overcomes I cant get enough of that type of news. I sure wish the nightly news would share those stories more often than the stories of violence that they so enjoy.

    I am going to do it for the reasons you described. The bible says to do it and the bible says it works.

    I brought it up to the pastor of my old church before I had the surgery and he scoffed at me. I don't remember what exactly he said (the pain pills tend to affect my memory and I cant remember much of the last 2 years) but it was almost like I was punched in the stomach.
    I am so happy that I saw your post which has gotten me to start thinking about it again.

    I will be praying for you and God Bless. I know it works if all have faith, you and the Pastor or Elders.

    I believe the laying on of hands is good. It is certainly scriptural. However, we should be careful that it does not become the believed automatic mechanism for healing as it was in a church I attended years ago.

    I believe God heals for his glory and for the upbuilding of His kingdom. Not necessarily for our comfort. Many times God is teaching us something while not healing us. Other times it simply is not God's will to heal us. Our part is to trust Him regardless.

    As Brother Bob said, God does not heal everytime. We do not know all of God will for our lives, so we should not assume God will always heal us. This may sound harsh, but it is better to be in God's will than be healed.

    Years ago, I was in a church that had prayer for the sick by the laying on of hands almost every service. The problem with that church (denomination) was if you did not get healed, you must have sin in your life. In one case, the pastor's wife died after a long case of cancer. It was really tough on the pastor.

    Yes, God still heals, but for His glory and in His will

    Brother Bob,

    I believe that one reason some people aren't healed when they follow the instructions in James 5:14-16 is because they skip the instruction in James 5:13 which says "Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray."

    God opened my eyes to this a few years ago when, at a church I was attending, it seemed like the same people would go up front for prayer week after week after week. During one of the services, while this was going on, it's like God spoke to me and said the reason they aren't getting healed is because they're expecting somebody else to do all their praying for them.

    I don't recall that we've ever laid hands on a sick person. But we have gathered the pastor and deacons to pray for and anoint a sick member with oil. We have also gathered the congregation together to pray for a specific sick member. On one occasion, we prayed for a member who was near death. Her family reported that at the very moment we prayed, her fever broke and she began to improve.

    Sometimes God answers a prayer for healing with a no. But just as Jesus intended to heal the blind man, he still asked him, "what do you want?" Knowing that God will do what brings glory to Himself, we still pray fervently for the healing we desire. Our praying is not in faith for healing, but in faith that God knows what is best and will do it.

    I agree and have seen the same at our church. There are some members who find great comfort in others praying directly for them so I don't mind. I agree that all of our afflictions will not be healed but God is able if its his will but in the end some kind of sickness if not an accident will eventually take us. If we die in the Lord we will rejoice all the way to Heaven for to die in Christ is gain. When we pray though we must not doubt or we certainly will not be healed. It must be in faith believing and if it turns out its not God's will then He still will take care of us. I have had 2 open heart surgeries, two neck artery surgeries but I can truthfully say that I think the Lord everyday for what I have left. I could never tell someone how much I really believe in the power of healing for it we don't get our bodies healed we still get our hearts healed and can accept our sickness much better, or at least its that way with me.

    One other thing, God gave us the doctors also for He says they that are not sick need not a physician, so therefore they that are sick do need one. If not for doctors I certainly could not of had heart surgery.

    Tom;
    We kneel and pray and in our prayer we then say; "Father as we lay our hands up Brother...... you said to ask and we would receive and we ask that you reach down your tender hand of mercy and healing and lay upon brother..... and heal ....... of course we then thank Him for always hearing us.

    In so many churches, they tell us to pray, but they don't teach us "how".

    They tell us to witness, but they don't teach us "how".

    Thank you for posting this.

    I certainly agree that God gave us doctors.

    I also believe that God can heal miraculously, if he so chooses.

    I have no qualms going to a doctor, but I certainly do it prayerfully, and I choose Christian doctors.

    I ain't seen any faith healing happen. I have seen people excitedly say their stomach or back pain or headache suddenly got better after being prayed for, but it's no coincidence there is nothing to authenticate this, and I am definitely a sketpic on what people say. If someone with a missing arm or leg miraculously grew anther one, I would join the bandwagon. Otherwise... fie.

    Alcott;
    That is not going to happen. The Lord said no sign would be given and to see that certainly would be a sign. The way you feel now you probably never will see it happen for it take "faith believing" for it to happen. Believe the Scriptures and what they say for the Lord cannot lie. I have seen it happen many many times over the years. When I was a child we couldn't afford doctors so when we became sick mother took us children to an old Baptist preacher to pray and lay hands on us. It is not a show it is simply laying your hands on a person anywhere and praying for the Lord to heal them. If you believe in the Lord you must believe He can heal you?

    Bro. Bob, I do believe in the Lord healing. Two and a half years ago my dear sister had a brain aneurism( stroke) and I have prayed for her ever since to recover. She has gotten better but she still cannot talk or walk. She can understand and proves it to me with facial expressions.Sometimes I get very discouraged but I still know that if God choses He will restore her health.I still pray and believe.I don't understand about the laying on of hands. Mk
