Hi all,

I joined back in 2002.. and it just hit me today... (I know I am slow)
I don't know much about how BB started...

How was it started?
Who started it?
Etc...

Can some of you old timers give this young pup some of your wisdom here?

I joined in 2000, and a gentlemen in upstate New York had it running. I don't really know why, maybe Barnabas the elder knows. (the former owner, not the current one) was Barnabas the younger, and had it for several years until he sold this to the current owner--wasn't that many years ago.

Welllllll.....there are two trains of thought:
1. The BB was created in 7 24-hour days. First, came the light background....later came the smileys. The mods (the pinnacle of BB-dom) were created on the final day. All of the "helpmate mods" were created with Dr. Bob's rib. This explains his health problems...it's not too healthy to go around with no ribs.
2. The BB evolved. First, there was lava. Then, there were bacteria. Then came KJVO, followed by Millenium Exclusionists. The mods were next...followed by prolific posters such as TinyTim and Rbell. It is thought that we will evolve into pure energy...I don't know if that is true, but recent hair loss suggests an acceleration of this process.
Keep in mind...there IS evidence for theory #2: Recent bannings do suggest "survival of the fittest."

Written with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. If this offends, get a life. :wavey:

I think it was more of a big bang. Two IFB's were debating one day, and bang, they took it online.

I haven't been a member all that long, but here is what I have found out from the web...

1. The BB went online on or around Oct 18th 2000. Give or take six months or so.

2. The BB had four rules:

BaptistBoard.com has four very simple rules:
Rule One:Everyone - Be Nice and Respectful at all times.
Rule Two:Everyone - Since, your opinions will be challenged, if you can not handle it, please stay out.
Rule Three:Everyone - No Personal Flames and No Offensive Language
Rule Four:Non-Baptists - Feel free to read all areas, but your comments and questions are limited to the "Other Religions" and "Secular Topics" Forums.

3. The BB went offline the beginning of 2001 for a short period of time while they were moving on a new server.

4. When the BB came back online, they only had three rules:

BaptistBoard.com has three very simple rules:
Rule One: Be Nice and Respectful at all times.
Rule Two: No Personal Flames and No Offensive Language
Rule Three: Since, your opinions will be challenged, if you can not handle it, please stay out.

5. By March of 2002, they had included more rules, theye were up to four, but the fourth one linked to these:

Rule #0: This is a private Baptist board. Conduct on Baptist Board should reflect the person of Jesus Christ.

Rule #1: The Golden Rule - 'Post unto others as you would have them post unto you'

Rule #2:We offer a wide range of forums. Most are for BAPTISTS only, to post opinions, views, beliefs and ideas. We also have a few forums for all Christians and a few "FREE FOR ALL" Forums for BAPTISTS, CHRISTIANS and NON-CHRISTIANS, with pertinent topics that relate to everyone. Friendly nonmembers are invited to listen or participate as they desire, in the appropriate forums.
Rule #3: Show grace to the other posters. When someone disgrees with you, discuss it; but be slow to offend, and eager to get into the Word and find the answers. Remember, when discussing passionate issues, it is easy to go too far and offend. Further, if we are "earnestly contending for the faith" it would be unrealistic not to expect at times to be misunderstood or even ridiculed. But please note that your words can sometimes be harsh if used in the wrong way. The anger of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
Rule #4: Personal attacks will not be tolerated. The board has an edit button enabled. We encourage you to use it and edit your own words, in an effort to maximize rule number one. Moderators and Administrators will be visibly proactive in dealing with potentially offensive situations. Posts of a violent or threatening nature, either implicitly or explicitly, will be deleted, and the poster’s membership revoked. Suspension of posting privileges is an opportunity to reconsider words posted, tone of posts, and the feelings of others. We encourage personal problems with other members be resolved via email or personal messaging.
Rule #6: We reserve the right to remove any posts without notice to the author or those who have replied.
Our first goal here is to share the word and love of Christ with all people. Please note that unbelievers visit this site as well and when they see anger toward others in the Body of Christ they immediately pass a bad judgment on us as a whole. Please be sensitive to this issue. Let us "speak the truth in love."

6. In July of 2002, they changed the Banner from:

to

7. In November of 2003 they added the Top 20 topics on the front page.

8. Sometime between November of 2003 and June orf 2006 the BB was sold and bought by Andrew (I think that is his name)

9. In or around June of 2006 they finally switched from the old software (which really sucked) UBB to

vBulletin ( a great new forum software package.

10. Around July 19 2007 Andrew added Ads to the BB to help offset the costs.

John the Baptist was working on some home improvements, so he went to his carpenter cousin, Jesus, who gave him a nice 2 by 6 piece of lumber. It was not sanded, so it was a bit rough, but it was henceforth known as...

The FIRST BB software upgrade came during the days of Noah. It was needed after a flood damaged the original BB servers.

In the mid-1500's, the BB was nearly shut down due to the number of GBO ("Geneva Bible Only") arguments that cropped up; but it weathered that storm.

John Calvin & Jacob Arminius were both banned from the BB...they couldn't get along...and they kept slamming Luther for advocating the use of alcohol in moderation.

If the rumors are true...the Aposle Paul wasn't allowed to post here, after repeatedly discussing circumsicion after being warned by Dr. Bob.

OK, am I in trouble yet? :D :D :D

Thank goodness you cleared that up, rbell. But I think you got one point wrong.

GBO is the International Airport in Greensboro, NC. I have been there many times flying from place to place and have had to argue with security there quite often.

BTW, some of the security there do look ancient. ROFL

I think I joined not long after the BB came online, there are only a few who have been here that long. I know Dr. Bob is one, can't remember the others. When I got here there weren't as many forums, and there were individual forums for different baptists (sbc, ifb, etc.) they didn't get much traffic so they were done away with.

I think BB came online in the spring, april or may, something like that.

Thanks...

Check out what I found...

Statistics on BB... http://www.quantcast.com/baptistboard.com

Click on traffic tab, and the Look at the line graph...
We are not as busy now as we were last summer....
When did the mass bannings take place?

59% of visitors are passersby... with 41% regulars and NO ADDICTS!!!
YEAH right!!!

Also... this made me laugh... This site reaches approximately 7,634 U.S. monthly uniques. The site appeals to a primarily older, mostly Caucasian, college educated, mostly male audience. The typical visitor visits doityourself.com, shops at Barnes & Noble, and reads crosswalk.com.

And Saggy will love the demographics tab!!!

I'll have to go dig around that site later. How do they gather their info?

The age, gender, college is fairly easy to determine.

Shopping habits, ethinicity, income, however, are a different issue.
