One area that is still fuzzy to me is the Holy Spirit.
In the Old Testament, New Testament...
Indwelling (within you) and Upon (upon you)...
The different natures of the Holy Spirit.

So I open this thread to try to reconcile things that I was taught about the HS and things I am reading in scripture that just do not make sense.

What part does the HS play in salvation? How were people saved in the OT verses the NT if they were not indwelt?

I will start with that question..

Under the old Covenant, he would come and live, as he would annoit a select few in isreal, such as the prophets/priests/Kings to do their work for God...

He would also come upon the Judges as Samson for a time/reason, but would also depart from them...

but now in the New Covenant period... he comes IN all belivers in jesus!

Sealed in all of us, and we have the choice to either be filled by Him or not...

ALL christians are sealed and indwelt by the Holy Spirit today, but we can also choose to have him infilling us daily, in order to have His empowering to live for jesus! per Apostle paul, but filled with the Spirit, not wine!

chrsitians who live for god out of their own efforts/will power/strenght have the Spirit JUST indwelling them, those who yield and submi to Him get his power to live for God!

Like I said before I was taught that the indwelling HS only happen in the NT. But John the Baptist was filled
In Isaiah 63:11 it says..."where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

    Psalm 51:11
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

The Holy Spirit was not given permanently to those who believe until after Jesus is glorified.

God through the Holy Spirit can talk through a burning bush, a worm, a donkey, and etc., but it doesn't mean they are saved.

The messenger is nothing, but the one who sent him and the message the words of life is everything.

It is those who believe God who is credited His righteousness. God has not changed the same people was saved in the old and new testament, those who enter His rest.

    Hebrews 4

4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[Some manuscripts because those who heard did not combine it with faith] 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[Psalm 95:11; also in verse 5]

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[Gen. 2:2] 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

6 Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7 God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”[Psalm 95:7,8]

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[Or labor] just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Not to hijack your thread, but I also have a question on the matter. I went to a full gospel Pentecostal Church of God for a while. They taught that you were only filled with the Holy spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (utterance). They backed it up with scripture also.

My personal stance? I believe it happened to people, I believe it still does as God can do all things. And I believe if it were meant for me God will put it on me. I always felt uncomfortable around it and thus felt that was not the church I was meant to attend.

Speaking in tongues is not the only evidence of being Baptized in the Holy Spirit. Prophesy was mentioned just as much if not more. I do believe the manifestation of the Holy Spirit still exist today!

What are you saying His rest is? The promise land? Do you believe the promise land = salvation?

    Psalm 62:1
[ Psalm 62 ] For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.

    Psalm 62:5
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

    Psalm 116:7
Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.

    Jeremiah 6:16
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

    Mathew 11:
21 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

The simple answer is in the Lord. We depending on what He has done not what we have done. Him working through us not us working to Him. We can't reach heaven not without someone who has come down from there and returns on the Fathers right side to Intercede for us. Jesus is the manna from heaven any who eats and drinks Him will have eternal life

I was an Elder in the assemblies of God before becoming a baptist, so know pentacostal theology!

they misunderstand that the book of Acts is a transistional historical account of what happened in the period between old/new testaments, but much of it is NOT to be seen as the normative way god works towards us today!

For the "tongues" were legitimate in acts, but were given to fulfill OT prophecy, and to show that the Holy spreiit had come in his new way of relating towards God and man, in that he now would seal and live in all believers permently!

the Bible clearly states ALL saved have the Spirit of God, but that NOT all are filled up and controlled by him!

NO need for the "baptism of the Holy Ghost', as ALL were already "baptised' by Him into the body of Christ, so they err on that, also on tongues being for today and a sign of having the Spirit!

the assemblies err in teach the tongues/sign of/ and the Baptism is something after savation, but at least they do NOT say one MUST speak in togues to be saved!

Some churches do, and that is heresy!

Well, I am going to have to disagree on this one! I am in SBC and not all Baptist believe the manifestations of the HS have passed. We are experiencing a lot of it!

No where in the Bible does it say all of it has passed, it was given to the church to carry out the ministry...to edify..for power..Why would God stop it?

the tongues were given by God to fulfill OT prophecies, and signs and wonders given to the Apsotles to confirm the Gospel , and jesus as messiah...

The Holy Spirit still gives gifts to saints, just that tongues/signs/wonders NOT for today in sense Apsotles had them..

God still does do healings, and can do miracles still, just no one gifted as such to do them, their from God directly, in response to prayers and per His sovereign Will!
