How does this affect the USA? That is what some of you may think. And it is a good question.

Here is the likely path for seeing outrageous laws in Europe find a foothold in the US.

    1. Europe grows stronger and more unified. (They already have an army of sorts, a single ambassador etc...)

    2. The US gets a liberal government (Hilary Clinton back for a third term...)

    3. The EU puts pressure on the rest of the world to comply with its religion (Humanism/Paganism)

    4. I ran out of points but I didn't like to finish on an odd number...

Of course, this is highly hypothetical, I am not a political commentator and this is a disclaimer. :)

But, it is possibel from what I see, hear and read...

In many, many, many ways, the US is just a little bit behind the UK in terms of politics and religion. Look at the UK now and you will see your potential future.

For the benefit of our American viewers, this case has nothing to do with the Church of England being the Established Church in England and Wales - that's a complete red herring - but has everything to do with the Sexual Orientation Regulations which are part of the Equality Act - the text of the Regs can be found here - which make it generally unlawful for a person or organisation to discriminate on the basis of someone's sexual orientation. Reg 14 provides for certain religious exemptions but Reany's argument in this case is that the nature of the advertised job fell outside reg 14; +Anthony's courageous counter-argument is that his refusal to employ Reany has nothing to do with his sexual orientation* (and that therefore the SORs are irrelevant) and everything to do with his sexual conduct which he rightly says is at variance with Church teaching.

Pray that the tribunal will also rule that the case doesn't come under the SORs.

*Reany declared on his application form for the job that he was gay and +Anthony said that if the Church discriminated purely on the basis of sexual orientation they wouldn't have invited him for interview.

PS Can't wait to say the first case on the SORs involving Muslims...!
