hymns and copyright

    I was wondering if anyone had any experience in music production who might be aware of what type of copyright issues may surround old hymns. I would assume that most of the old hymns are out of copyright, and that anyone could make a recording and distribute it freely.

    I guess what I'm mainly wondering is if it is possible to release a recording of an old hymn that is in public domain under a Creative Commons license or something similar? I should clarify, the recording is not under public domain, the hymn is. I think I made that clear anyway... :)
