I need some advice

    A deacon in our church, his wife has stopped coming to church and has resigned all of her positions. There has been no talk about it, as far as I know there was not a problem that I am aware of. He still is attending. He has said nothing to me about a problem. Everybody has questions but nobody seems to know why she left. All of her close friends are still attending also. It doesn't seem to be something of a personal nature or they would be talking I would think. I am the pastor and need some advice. I plan to go and see her this week.

    This may be way too simple, but if it were me, I'd start with the deacon first- a wife not attending church could be enough to disqualify this man from his office. I would think any other counsel on this matter would be purely speculative on our part, and would not really be helpful to you, brother.

    Pay them a visit some evening and you may find out some things you would like to know.

    I have seen this happen before, and the reason is usually of a very personal and very serious nature (severe marital discord, adultery, etc.). Be prepared ahead of time to refer them to Biblical counseling, and be prepared to be shocked.

    Lots of times it is something minor - but the church reflects other problems (marital, physical, relatives, work) and will be affected.

    Second the notion to just drop by and visit with him first. Don't go to the wife, but do it thru the husband. That is the proper procedure.
