I know a lady who belly dances (with her husband's support and approval).

    Pretty solid Christian.

How funny that you should ask this, Salty. My mother used to take belly dancing classes at the YWCA when I was a kid.

Keep in mind that this was back in the late 60s, early 70s. in a small, very Southern town.

Belly dancers were seen more or less as strippers. Not exactly a noble profession. Of course, she just did it for fun with her girlfriends, not to do it for a living or even in front of everybody.

I was little and I liked to play with her castenettes (sp?). One day, I took them to school and my teacher asked what they were. I explained to her that my mother was a belly dancer and that they were her castenettes.

It started quite a scandal in our little town. My grandmother, who I always thought was a lot like Corabeth on the Waltons, picked me up from school that day and gave me the whole, "I'll never be able to show my face again" speech. Before I even got out of school, the word was all over town and my mother was a marked woman.

It was even worse than the time when I was a child that I told my Sunday School teacher that my mother "drinks a lot", innocently referring to my mother's constantly having a cup of iced tea in her hand, and not realizing that to adults, "drinks a lot" means something completely different.

My mom used to tell me all the time, "Everyone of these gray hairs has your name on it".

It's not a big deal. Go ahead.

By the way, why are you asking me again?
