Actually it is totally off topic from the OP :).

Maybe someone wants to start a thread on "Which Manuscript Body Can We Trust?"

You're right. The point of the OP was that some people apparently buy certain Bibles because of their external, esthetic merits.

    Okey-dokey.

Has anyone here ever bought a Bible not because of the text -- but it's wonderful cover, texture, color or whatever?

Not really. I try to buy a version of the Bible that I like in a well constructed covering, I don't like "hard backed" Bibles too much, so it's usually leather or bonded leather. Is the culture different in Japan where maybe having a Bible like that is a "social" thing?

You'd have to ask someone living in Japan like JoJ. I live in South Korea. Also, I had made it clear in my OP that the woman who was so excited about her new ESV was western. I don't think Koreans are that affected by Bible-cover-mania.

I'd rather have good meat inside an icky crust.

So I'd pick a good version with a bad cover over a bad version with a good cover.

Of course once I find the version I want, I do choose within that version a Bible with a good cover. I love my ESV. I found one on Amazon for under $20 with a very comfortable and pretty cover. But before the ESV was out for very long, I could only afford the paperback and I got it. That's the Bible I keep next to my computer for looking up things. My nicer ESV is better for going out because it's a bit sturdier.

I'd never just buy a Bible because of the cover. What a waste of money.

I completely agree. But I want to know if anyone here once in a while buys Bibles just for the sake of beautiful covers.

First, I apologize. I thought you were in Japan, but I should have remembered it was South Korea. After all, it says so right on your posts! Forgive me. Anyway, I think MAYBE some Bible collectors might just buy a Bible for the cover alone. You know, a collector that doesn't really read them, just wants a copy of various versions as a hobby.

Me, I tend to only buy one copy at a time and use it up before buying another, although I have various versions given to me as gifts.

Isn't that a reason why there are Bible covers for sale?
