In his signature line Bap Board member Robert Snow has a quote by American politician Gabrait.
"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." (bold my emphasis)

That is quite a stretch. Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse U,( a very liberal school may I add) published "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism." The surprise is that liberals are markedly less charitable than conservatives.

Campbell Rinker, a company in Calif did a study and found that Conservatives are much liberal with charity.

Mr. Snow, the difference between Conservatives and Liberals is that we are more than willing to help the needy who will assume responsibility, wherein the Libs want to feel good by assisting the GREEDY without be concerned with responsibility.

As Paul Harvey would say - "The Rest of the Story"

Well one thing we can say for the Obama Admin and Dem Congress of the last two years: Now EVERYBODY is getting poorer. So I guess they have shown how to take care of that pesky inequality problem

Liberals search for a superior moral justification by giving selflessly of other people's money.

I always find this principle funny. It has been shown in study after study that Liberals are considerably less charitable with their own money (at the same income levels) when compared to conservatives. I believe that some respected studies have even shown that conservative households give twice on average what Liberal households give. I guess that the old saying is true...talk is cheap; people show their priorities by how they spend their money.

Liberals believe only the ulra-rich should help the poor. That's why the run of the mill liberal's charitable donations are so low.

Liberals believe in a classic Robin Hood mentality. Take from the rich, give to the poor, leave the middle alone.

Oh if they would only actually leave the middle class alone!

Anyone here, hear of the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax)?

It has been patched every year except this year allowing for relief of the Middle Class...

    http://www.taxgirl.com/the-waiting-game-and-amt/

Note that if not patched the Joint Filing Threshold is: $45,000...

Yep leaving the Middle Class Alone...

    Also note:
THIS IS NOT COVERED BY ANY EXTENSION OF THE BUSH TAX CUTS!

This is the tax NO ONE is talking about!

ABCGRAD has a great signature - A much better than the one in the OP

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not".
    --Thomas Jefferson

and if you forgot here is the quote in the OP:

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. ~John Kenneth Galbraith

So which one makes more sense?

Yeah, but Matt, Liberals across all income levels give considerably less than their conservative counterparts. This includes the super-wealthy liberals as well. While there are a few well-known liberal philanthropists, as a group they are extremely stingy.

Many will remember that then-Vice President Al Gore had given a speech on the need fro Americans to be more charitable...then he released his financial statement for the year and had only given about $350 to charity (out of a very large income based on his salary, his holdings, and book royalties).

There was a recent report that the Obama's, prior to going into the White House had given less than 1% of their income over the previous 5 years to charity. Again, they were far from poor, pulling in income in the millions.

Even the liberal New York Times did a piece on this phenomenon, reporting that liberals quite simply do not put their money where their mouth is...even when they have plenty of money to use.

Again, where you spend your money and your time show where your heart truly is. Charity is cheap and easy when you get to spend somebody else's money.

    I have a better one:

The modern Liberal is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior legal justification for theft.

I have a book in my library where this study of the generosity to charitable giving was presented, and the reports in this thread are correct. Liberals don't give to charity from their personal funds, just from mine and those of other taxpayers.

To a liberal, selfish means not willing to surrender money for redistribution by a government entity.

Their hypocracy is boundless, but among the favorite phrases for attack, selfish is high up on the list - right behind racially prejudiced.

I am a middle-class worker; and if the Bush tax cuts aren't extened and the AMT isn't patched, my taxes go up $5000 this year. Sure am glad that the middle class isn't going to see taxes go up!

Even worse... they were not charitable contributions at all.

They were political contributions that they illegally deducted as charitable contributions. This coming from two lawyer/politicians no less.

Until they had to publicly disclose their tax returns - at which time they amended them.

After doing so it showed ZERO charitable contributions.
