This topic has probably been discussed, but I thought I might ask, again.

John R. Rice was definately NOT KJV only - though very strongly KJV preferred.

So why is the Sword now KJV only?

    The Current Editor

While I'm sure I don't know all the finer details I'm sure it has something to do with the convictions of the current Editor, Shelton Smith and his staff. I, for one, am glad that they are as I am KJVO myself. However...I have NO criticism whatsoever about Dr. Rice. He wasn't perfect as none of us are...but He was much used of God and I'd say the same about Dr.Smith. John of Japan may be able to shed some light on the past AND current state of things with the SOTL since Dr. Rice was his grandfather.

Depends on how far KJO they are - do they believe that you can only be saved by reading the KJV?, Do they believe that any who use other than KJV are of fellowship with the Lord...

    From their doctrine statement:
WE BELIEVE the Bible, the Scriptures of the Old Testament and the New Testament, preserved for us in the Masoretic text (Old Testament) Textus Receptus (New Testament) and in the King James Bible, is verbally and plenarily inspired of God. It is the inspired, inerrant, infallible, and altogether authentic, accurate and authoritative Word of God, therefore the supreme and final authority in all things (II Tim. 3:16-17; II Peter 1:21; Rev. 22:18-19).

Take it for what it is worth.
If Dr Rice was not KJO, then I assume that this statement was added after JRR years. If so, I wonder who did?

Additional question for John of Japan -
are there any Rice family members on the board? Any particular reason why a Rice did not take over?

    Just For The Record....

Salty...for the record...I am KJVO but I DO NOT believe the underlined above.

As for the fellowship thing...I'm not prepared to say MV users are out of fellowship...just that they haven't "seen the light" or learned the truth about the Word of God yet. I believe God ignores or tolerates a lot of ignorance on the part of his children as they grow in grace. It's the deliberate disobedience or rebellion that He gets angry about. I also know that it is likely that somebody is going to turn THAT statement around on me and figuratively "slap me upside the head" with it.

Ignorance and hypocrisy which is nothing knew to the IFB movement. However I am not sure I can comment on John R. Rice as I do not know.

The statement was definitely added after JRR went to Heaven in 1980. His successor Curtis Hutson did distribute Riplinger's first book (something I strongly oppose), but I do not know if he changed the statement.

I always visit the SOTL when I can and say hello to my friends there and Dr. Smith (I worked there for awhile after college), but am not in the loop as to what is happening there nowadays.

To give some perspective, when Grandpa was looking for a successor he discussed it with me. (He would do that, discuss major matters with minor people to help them grow as well as get new perspectives.) At that time he told me, "Johnny, I have come to understand that God does not call ministries, but men." His point was that when he retired or died, the SOTL would no longer be his, but whoever followed him would stand on his own.
There are no family members on the board at the present time. I doubt if any of us would fit Dr. Smith's vision and positions at this time.

Neither my Dad nor any of my uncles were in a position to take over in 1980. The only real possibility was Walt Handford as far as the right skill set and leadership abilities, and he was content to be pastor of a large and growing church at that time.

The decidedly downhill slant of the Sword began with the KJVO stand they took under Curtis Hutson. IFB in general have never been solidly KJVO. I remember as a student at TTU hearing visiting pastors use verses from the NASB or even saying, "This verse (or word) might be better translated as" from the pulpit.

Dr. Rice himself would quote approvingly from various translations. As a matter of fact he did a LOT of things that would cause the current editor of the Sword to have a case of apoplexy and to write a column or two entitled "Dr. John Rice - gone modernist?"

John, thank you for your insight and information.
But, I must disagree on one small thing. You said Walt was "content". I would say Walt was led of the Lord.:saint:

E-7, Do you know what John meant when he used the word ignorance?

too bad your family wasn't able to stay with the Sword. It would be nice for it to be like it was back when JRR was there.

I was just yanking your chain. :saint:

But then of course you must believe that calling a group of Christians ignorant and hypocritical is nice and kind, right? Let me ask, were your profs during your two years at BJU ignorant and hypocritical?

Would say they "might" be a tad narrow minded, and living by letter not Spirit of the Law?

So your Grandpa papernow being published by strict Fundamentalists?

Exactly. That's like asking Bruce Lee's daughter "why don't YOU run Jeet Kune Do?"

John of Japan: I always appreciate your insight.
