It's a never ending battle, but unfortunately all the bad guys have to do is succeed once in a while.

There are also likely many others that we will never know.

It is a testament to the good work of those in service to the nation.

The system isn't perfect (I think we do need some reforms), but I'm glad to see that the tools are being used to protect us.

That is quite an eye opener. Does anyone know why we do not use the alert color level anymore? Are we still at yellow?

I don't really know and I could be wrong but it seems to me that since Micheal Chertoff took over it has been spoken of less.

I believe it was at orange when I was flying through the US in early Feb.

The level is yellow currently. Link

    Great news...

I have to also wonder what their record was before 9/11? It seems we measure all terrorist activity since 9/11 but our government was thwarting plots before 9/11. So the measure of post 9/11 security would be to know the increase in thwarted plots...

However, I will feel a lot better when we seal up the borders and register all the people in this country. It just seems dumb to pay for all that airport security with the door from Mexico wide open.

It seemed to be used mainly during the year 2004. And since we all know what major event took place during the year 2004 it isn't hard to figure out why the alert level was manipulated so much during that year.

Cute :( we get to play 'guess what the teacher is thinking of' -- my bad, I ended with a preposition 'guess of what the teacher is thinking'.

Here, I'll make it a multiple choice question:

    A. dec 2004 - intellegence reform bill signed by Pres.
    B. June 2004 - US turns over Iraq to local control
    C. July 2004 - 9/11 Commission report released
    D. July 2004 - US-SC releases 3 decisions that curtail Pres regarding rights of terrorism detainess
    E. March 2004 - California-SC stops San Franscio from giving homosexual couples marriage permits
    F. Jan-Oct 2004 - John Kerry running for president
    G. Nov 2004 - Bush re-elected pres.

So, guess of what was KenH thinking?

    I'll end the "suspense". :)

2004 was President Bush's re-election year. The Republicans tend to do better in national elections when national security is a huge topic. What better way to keep national security as a huge topic during 2004 than to periodically ratchet up the alert level.

It is interesting that we have not been treated to such tactics during the past three years after President Bush won his re-election.

The color code is still used, and it is higher at airports than for other things. But it is totally stupid. What does it mean to the average citizen? What do you do different at orange than at yellow?

Guess if it goes up, we hear more fear mongering from the administration about using plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal your house up. Morons!

Just because the alert level goes up does not necessarily mean we need to do anything except be on the alter. Why is it silly to be made aware of types of threats? Fact is it is not.

If you don't do anything different, what good is the code? Plus, the silly color code doesn't tell you what type of threat is possible. Only that the fearmongers want to scare you.

I'll agree to this. A generic up-tick in the code level doesn't do anything. The US is a large country. If the code is issued for a local region, though, then people might be more vigilant.

It clearly does do something. It lets people know whare we are at with terrorist activity. What the left doesn't like about it is that having such a code doesn't let them live in denial and continue to destroy our military.

So tell us, where ARE we at that you gleaned from the color code that isn't already common knowledge?

It is mere window dressing to make it appear we have some control, when we do not.
