    We are planning on going on to Memphis this year for our vacation. Has anyone gone there for vacation or live there? We were planning on staying at the La Quinta Inn. Anyone know anything about it? Has anyone been to Beale Street? How much is dinner at BB King's? What about Ruth's Chris Steakhouse? Is the Memphis Zoo worth going to see? Give me your experiences and advice.

    I enjoyed the zoo but that was about 15 years ago. I also enjoyed the Pink House.

    My wife and I have visited Memphis, but only Graceland. We didn't go into the city. You gotta visit Elvis' joint.

    There is that Island by I40 that you should see.

    Plus Elvis' house.

    I have been to Memphis and loved it.

    You should check out Mudd Island (The Memphis Belle is there), Graceland, The Civil Rights Museum in the old Lorraine Motel and, of course, the famous Peabody Ducks.

    You might want to eat lunch on Beale Street, but if you go at night expect some drunks and panhandlers.

    Ruth Chris' Steak House is legendary. Very expensive but when they say "butter knife steaks", they are not joking.

    Get someone else to pay . . .

    If you're going to an event where a lot of other people will be then I wouldn't think twice about it. We were there on a weeknight, but it never felt dangerous. Just some stumblers and one of those "Hey, man I'm down on my luck. Can you spare a dollar?" types. Lots of tourists, so they try to keep it safe.

    There's a Ruth's Chris in every big city here in Texas, and yes they are excellent and expensive. I would recommend Texas de Brazil or perhaps a nice place that is unique to Memphis. But, hey, you won't regret it if you decide on Ruth's. Enjoy!

    I used to live in Memphis. The zoo is nice--it's worth going to. Beale Street: I never ate at BB King's but I would not consider it dangerous to go to Beale Street.
