    OK gang,

I did not see this topic, and I know it has been discussed lately in the news...why do you all think that Mormonism has gained so much ground, where as 15 years ago people called it for what it was? A cult.

    OK... let it begin! :type:

I discussed the issue of it being a cult on my blog but you add a little twist.

Mormonism has gained acceptance for a number of reasons.

    1. Our modern and post-modern culture that likes to be more "tolerant".
    2. Theological ignorance that sees mormonism as a sect of Christianity and not a religion that is a distinct religion.
    3. Advertising. Mormons have advertised well and used the media better than any other religion in history.

As for this being a cult, I would caution people. In theological circles and in non-theological circles the word "cult" has two different meanings. Theologically, Mormonism is a cult because of doctrine. However, when someone says "cult" to the normal person they think of a secretive, abusive, and socially troublesome group (read Jim Jones). Thus, I do not think it is helpful for us to use the word "cult" when referring to Mormons when we are outside of theological circles.

But Ruiz, no one but Mormons in "good standing" know what goes on behind closed temple doors.

have wrong nature of God theology, as God to them was once a man who evolved to godhood...
Believe in 3 seperate gods, not a trinity of 1 God, but 3 gods
Believe jesus/satan brothers, and that Jesus was born of an act between Adam and mary..
say Blood of jesus atones for sins, but also adds water baptism/obedience to their gospel etc
ONLY men get full rights here and in heave, as they will become gods with wives and kids on own earth...

    basically, satanic 101!

I'd Like to Address this Post, But....

....I can see, walking up my sidewalk, toward the front door, two young blond haired men in white shirts, black pants and thin black ties. I believe the topic of this post is about to make their regualr weekly missionary visit in order to convert me to Mormonism.

I'll have to get back to you and this post later!

Okay, I was in the LDS church and yes, it is a cult.

    Why has it gained acceptance?

They've worked very hard over the last 15/20 years to make themselves acceptable. They have started using terms familiar to Christians and have strongly pushed to put themselves in the public eye as a Christian denomination. When one first joins, they are not made fully aware of all the beliefs and discourage members from studying on their own, claiming that newcomers must have "milk before meat." Even those who grew up in that system of faith often remain woefully ignorant of the complete history and full beliefs of the LDS church.

An example is the Bible. No missionary will come to your door and say "we don't believe the Bible is true." They claim to use the same Bible, and indeed they do. Later you find they believe it contains major errors and that only the writings of the prophets and/or the "fixed" version of the Bible Joseph Smith wrote, which conveniently contains a prophecy of his own coming. So it must be true, he wrote it into the Bible and said it was supposed to be there before, but it was lost because the fullness of prophecy was taken away from us for a time but glory be, it is BACK!

Another example is that they don't advertise that they don't believe Jesus is who he said he was. He's just another one of us...God's spirit children, as is Satan, and his blood was only shed for us AFTER all we can do. His blood alone is not enough. He isn't the key to heaven for those in our time, Joseph Smith is the prophet for our time and holds the keys to heaven, so you can't get in without his permission.

There's so much they don't say. It sounds like a typical Christian presentation based on Christian doctrine.

They're also very family oriented and that is very attractive. They got things right on this part...they do take care of their own and people work together. It's the way things should be. They act like Christian should act but don't when it comes to their emphasis on family, health, and taking care of the poor, elderly, or sick among them.

So why wouldn't they gain a rapid audience? They sound good. They look good. They're powerful. They make one feel safe. They make one feel loved. They make one feel cared about.

It FEELS right and it LOOKS right. Unfortunately, the end of it is death, eternal separation from the Father because they reject the truth. They reject the power of the cross, they reject who God is, they reject who Christ is, and that means that no matter what they say, they reject the one and only true way of salvation. They still believe we are in need of priest, and don't realize that with Christ's death and resurrection, we no longer need to go through a priest. If there's anything you try to drill into a missionaries head before you get black-listed, make it that - we have no need of an earthly priest anymore, we're all on level ground now and anyone claiming otherwise is a liar and those believing it are deceived.

This group puts me in mind of the Scripture at 2 Timothy 3:6.

"For of this sort are they who creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with various lusts, ... into houses, making prisoners of foolish women, weighted down with sin, turned from the way by their evil desires...," Course, this also includes men.

I attended the funeral of a Christian Woman who's daughter had married into the Mormon "religion". One of their elders got up and spoke for about ten minutes and it was absolutely nothing.

I remember this guy "grinned a lot" and that was about it. The rest of us, out of respect for the family just kind of sat there and grinned back at him while we bared it.

Good Post......Grew up with Mormon kids and still call many my friends. They have changed their approach and it is a kinder gentler view on theology the past few years....Do I try to win them to Jesus? Since I have been a kid, I have worked and won several to Christ. Sadly, they have been ostracized by members of their own family......BTW: They still try to convert me after 50+ years....
