It now appears to have agreed to the same deal Clinton had arranged six years ago the Bush scuttled in his first months in office.

Eventually with the same outcome. The N. Koreans cheated on that agreement. They'll cheat on this one.

Bush didn't ignore the cheating. Clinton did.

The agreement was never made - Bush refused to ratify it. Then.

Maybe, but they really, really are desparate for food and electricity.

You're claiming that Bush did not change the terms of agreement (which the Clinton administration was unable to finalize) in 2001?

For those concerned about Bush's big spending, how do you think a $400 million dollar blackmail payment will help the spending problems?

And what will be the next step when North Korea decides that $400 million wasn't enough, and they threaten to restart and we have to buy them off again?

Here's the general rule of thumb: Don't pay people to do stuff they shouldn't be doing anyway.

If they are desparate for food and money, tell them to open up their economy, their trade, change their government, and take the money they are spending on nuclear weapons and spend it on growth.

I am claiming this statement, "The agreement was never made - Bush refused to ratify it." is grossly mistaken.

    carpro,

What Bush has done, though, is ignore the cheating NK did on the prior agreement. Why does he think they won't cheat again? Why does anyone think they won't cheat again?

    Daisy,

Correction: The North Korean people are desperate for food. Kim Jong Il obviously doesn't care about that. And he could have done something about the electricity. The nuclear reactor at Yongbyon doesn't even have wiring/cables to transmit electricity away from it; it is clearly meant for nuclear weapons development.

    PL,

    Amen!

    ftr! How have you been?

He is clearly a wretched leader.

I still think it's better to throw the dog a bone than to get bit or have to shoot the mutt & all the pups.

The previous administration ignored the violations. mmmm ... should sound familiar . . . they ignored the bad guys on the other side of the world also. . . .

Come to think of it, he ignored everything except his intern.

Pres Bush did what he could until September 11th distracted us . . . and what a distraction - the liberals are still distracted . . . I guess they think it was just a made up event.

KIm whatshisface is not a dog. He is a communist leader who is starving his own people and indoctrinating them from the truth. The whole country is convinced we want them destroyed. This is the failure of communism.

Maybe this is because big-mouth Bush called them part of the "Axis of Evil" and then invaded Iraq.

Well they are as Bush says largley because og communism and their leadership. But the programs with Diane sawyer and the other gal who went over there showed that they do not get world news only what the communist state allows them to see.

I don't doubt this, but I don't think it was wise for Bush to say what he did. All his rhetoric did was to stir up unneeded animosity toward the U.S.

I don't doubt that the Chinese government used this blunder to stir up fear and anger toward America.
