Already three drivers are out of contention. Stewart and Mayfield were eliminated from contention by the R. Gordon temper tantrum. Newman had an engine failure. Here are my views on the remaining drivers:

Gordon Greatest NASCAR driver ever. Don't bet against him.

Johnson Also a good driver. Gets Gordon's setups & has proven he can handle them.

Kenseth Very smooth and consistent. You can never count out the defending champion.

Busch Very talented driver. Has a tendency to lose his temper and get into trouble.

Martin Has never won a championship. Don't expect him to start now

Earnhardt Jr. Has trouble on mid-size tracks and the remaining schedule includes three. I don't think he can pull it off.

Sadler The sleeper of the group. Could surprise everyone and if he does...I'll be surprised!

Gordon may be the best driver but NASCAR's point system will make someone else champion. NASCAR is the only series where the guy that wins the most races loses the championship. I hate NASCAR. Love the racing but I hate the organization.

I agree. Already the most consequential thing that has happened is that three drivers finished bad and are now out of the race. The most consequential thing SHOULD BE that Busch won on Sunday. THAT should be rewarded. Instead Busch is statistically tied with Earnhardt Jr, but E is considered the leader by a technicality even though he finished behind Busch. It makes no sense.

This whole chase thing with nascar is a total joke.

I agree with swaimj, it makes no sense.

I agree that the new points system stinks. The only change it needed IMO was to award an extra 50 points or so to race winners each race.

I also think that SwaimJ has given a very good summary. I disagree, though, about Jef Gordon. I don't think Gordon is the best driver ever. He's good, for sure, but "luck" seems to have a big part in his winning streaks. When he gets average breaks he turns in average performance.

I'd love to see Mark Martin win, but I sometimes doubt that he has the drive to do it. It often looks to me like he is happy to ease a first place car into a fourth place finish.

I wouldn't count anyone out after the first race, but those 3 drivers will have to have top 10 finishes the rest of the way and hope the others mess up.

Jeff Gordon is my favorite, but I wouldn't mind seeing Mark Martin sneak in and win a championship before he retires either. Jimmie Johnson and Dale Jr. will have to be a lot more consistent than they were the middle part of the season if they are going to win. I agree that Kurt Busch's temper will probably keep him out of it. Kenseth and Sadler have had good seasons and either of them could come out on top if they can avoid problems.

As far as the points system goes, I agree that it needs serious changes. Maybe, like Jim said, they should give a bigger bonus for winning and I think they shouldn't award points for drivers finishing out of the top 20. That would keep the wrecked cars from clogging up the track late in the race attempting to gain another 2 or 3 points. I still don't care for the Chase for the Championship, but I will admit it created some excitement in the usually dull part of the season.

I feel a little bad for the 11th - 15th place drivers that were only a few points out of the top 10 but are now locked out of it. It will be interesting to compare the standings at the end of the year with how they would have finished under the old system. So far, Ryan Newman and Jeremy Mayfield would have dropped out of the top 10 and Kasey Kahne and Jamie McMurray would have jumped in.
