On Friday, ASug.5, the NCAA announced that, starting in February 2006, it would ban the use of any nick or logo THEY considered ethnically hostile or abusive. This HAS to be one of their more idiotic decisions. I believe a member of the Seminole Council described it best by saying this is yet another case of non-Indians deciding what's best for Indians. (Fl.State has long worked with the Seminoles in determining what logos, mascots, and regalia would be honoring to the Seminoles, including naming their mascot after Chief Osceola, the most famous Seminole.)

As for the name "Indian" and other European names for them...Columbus, believing he'd reached India, called the people he saw "Indians". He wasn't being insulting; he honestly believed these people were citizens of the nation of India. Sitting Bull, that most-thoroughly-Sioux of the Sioux, called himself an Indian. Once, when some other tribes were mentioned to him by a news reporter, snorted, "Indians, HMMFF! There are no Indians left but ME!" (The name "Sioux" itself is a FRENCH name, that people's own name for themselves is "LAKOTA".)

Most Indians accepted the name "Indian" because they believed it to be the Europeans' name for their people, just as Europeans accepted the equivalent of "pale face".(I do NOT use the term "Native American" because it's WRONG! "America" is the name given to these continents by EUROPEANS who recognized the cartography of AMERIGO Vespucci.(1451-1512...To this day, Amerigo is still a very common italian surname.) I stick with the old "Indian", or, to confuse any New-Age-Liberal who may be polluting our presence, "Continental Aboriginal".

Here's the list of nicks the NCAA finds offensive as of Friday:

    Alcorn State University (Braves)
    Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
    Catawba College (Indians)
    Florida State University (Seminoles)
    Midwestern State University (Indians)
    University of Utah (Utes)
    Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians)
    Carthage College (Redmen)
    Bradley University (Braves)
    Arkansas State University (Indians)
    Chowan College (Braves)
    University of Illinois (Illini)
    University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians)
    McMurry University (Indians)
    Mississippi College (Choctaws)
    Newberry College (Indians)
University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
    Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)

I hope Fl. State and the Seminole people successfully sue the NCAA & that the NCAA replaces those New-Age-Liberal members!

If the NCAA bans 'Indian' mascots at tournaments, one suggestion would be for the fans to show up all dressed like the mascot and see if they think that's preferable.

"How the **** can 'the Chiefs' be offensive to Indians when 'chief' isn't even an Indian word?" - Glenn Beck 8/11/05

"That's just great. The same liberals who complain about the white man telling Indians what to do are now the white men who are telling the Indians what to do!" - Glenn Beck 8/11/05

Since Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin are the names of Indian tribes, does this mean that the NCAA is going to make those schools change their names?

Instead of wasting their time being condescending to the Indians and telling them what they should be offended by, why don't they put some of that energy into fixing the corrupt BCS system?

    Auburn fans will not forget.

"Savages" and possibly "Redmen," IMO, are the only truly offensive terms on the chopping block.

I'd really get a kick out of it if one of the teams renamed themselves the "Caucasians" in protest. :D

I think the schools in question should rename their institutions so their initials are N.C.A.A.
(North Carolina Accademic Academy etc.) and then pick a mascot like a skunk, a snake or Mule (or mule's close kin).
The NCAA Skunks sound fitting to me.

When are they going to ban the "Angels" baseball team name? I'm sure it's offensive to some religious group somewhere, ain't it?

The NCAA has completly lost their minds.

We have the NBA raiding the college basketball game of its best basketball players, sometimes even before they make it to campus, and the horribly flawed BCS "national championship" situation in college football, and yet these clowns have nothing better to do with their time then produce sheer lunacy such as this.

And I thought Miles Brand was going to be good for the NCAA.

The New-Age-Liberals have invaded the NCAA while ignoring REAL probs some nations of Indians have, such as alcoholism or having been forced to live on worthless land...or the worst, the attempts of well-meaning bureaucrats to make palefaces outta them.

These people just don't believe naming anything after an Indian nation or an Indian individual could possibly be HONORING those named.

The famous Shoshoni chief Washakie was honored by the fed. Govt. with a medal bearing his likeness. When presented with the medal, he stood silently for a few moments. When asked if he had anything to say, he remained silent a few moments more as a tear ran down his face. He then said, "When a white man is honored, he speaks with his mouth. When an Indian is honored, he speaks with his HEART."

The applause lasted over 10 minutes.

You bring up a point (slightly) [IMG]

What about teams who have the name "Crusaders"? Holy Cross comes to mind. Are these schools next?

The NCAA is backing off its original press statement, largely in part due to the overwhelming support of the FSU Seminole, including support from Governor Bush.

Plus the NCAA in their attempt at political correctness got caught NOT looking at the facts - the Seminole Tribe of Florida has actually endorsed the Seminole as the official mascot of FSU.

From what I understand, FSU goes out of its way (and rightly so) to work with the tribe and treat the mascot with respect.

Two examples -- all "Chief Osceolas" have to train with the Seminole tribe as to how to properly ride their horse and public appearances by the chief are very limited at anything other than a football game.

Also, I understand that the Seminole Tribe of OK voted to approve this as well. However, it was one of the two dissenting votes in OK that contacted the NCAA to begin with.

As a Floridian, I hope they keep the name.

As a Hurricane, I hope they just keep the field goal kicker.

Read in this mornings paper that Florida will be allowed to keep the Seminole name. Now that the precedent has been set, will the NCAA be able to enforce the rule with the other affected teams?

A college whose name has never been badmouthed...SHAWNEE STATE, in Portsmouth, OH. It's a nice school, built on land where once the Shawnee nation lived. There are a reasonable number of Indians representing several nations in this area, and i've never heard any of'em express disapproval.
