New York Times Says It Violated Policies Over MoveOn Ad

    By Howard Kurtz
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Monday, September 24, 2007; A08

After two weeks of denials, the New York Times acknowledged that it should not have given a discount to MoveOn.org for a full-page advertisement assailing Gen. David H. Petraeus.

The liberal advocacy group should have paid $142,000 for the ad calling the U.S. commander in Iraq "General Betray Us," not $65,000, the paper's public editor wrote yesterday.

Clark Hoyt said in his column that MoveOn was not entitled to the cheaper "standby" rate for advertising that can run any time over the following week because the Times did promise that the ad would run Sept. 10, the day Petraeus began his congressional testimony. "We made a mistake," Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis was quoted as saying.

MoveOn, saying it had no reason to believe it was paying "anything other than the normal and usual charge," said yesterday that it would send the Times $77,000 to make up the difference.

The Times also violated its own advertising policy, which bars "attacks of a personal nature," Hoyt reported. He wrote that the episode "gave fresh ammunition to a cottage industry that loves to bash The Times as a bastion of the 'liberal media.' "

Glad to see that all of this has now been straightened out.

Now if President Bush would ever admit to making a mistake that would really be a big news story.

Of course not, carpro. Only "conservatives" make mistakes. A non-conservative only does things with the worst motives in mind. We all know that "conservatives" are as pure as the wind-driven snow.

It's a little early to deal with your diatribes.

Why don't you save them for a topic that deserves them? Bush is not the topic of this thread.

Anyone who has ever worked in a large corporation knows that mistakes like this can happen.

Am I wrong, the charge is over the cost of the ad not the content?

Even had they run the article for free, the content was very damaging if true. Ii don't see anyone disuting the content, just the cost of the ad???

Moveon.org got a lot of attention and raised tons of money from this attention.

Personally, I am opposed to President Bush's Iraq policy but I also did not like the ad. General Petraeus is doing the best he can with the mess that President Bush has given him to work in.

Aside frrom th disgusting content they have a couple of prices. One for running adds at their leaisure and one for running it on a specific day. In this case moveon.org was given the cheaper price for running the add on a specific day. In other words the newspaper subsidized the add.
