Home schooling unlawful, says California court

A three-judge panel of the California Court of Appeal has determined parents in that state have no legal right to home school. A Christian attorney in Sacramento says unless the ruling is reversed, literally thousands of students in the Golden State will be subject to criminal sanctions.

HSLDA: No reason for California homeschoolers to panic -- yet

[IMG]An attorney with the Home School Legal Defense Association says he's confident a California appeals court ruling -- declaring home schooling illegal in the state -- will be reversed.

Too often we complain about public schools and then act as though any Christian is a great alternative. I can remember the day when my daughter was in fourth grade and brought home a magazine published by the SBC, from the church I was pastoring. She quickly pointed out the problems in an article in the magazine. The article was so wrong I was amazed at how it could have even been published. I called several other SBC pastors and we pulled it from the shelves in the church.

There have many opportunities in school that she has had to stand tall and defend the faith. We also seen home schoolers who have never led anyone to Christ. My neighbors had a daughter who was home schooled. She was so ignorant of what Mormons believed. She even was baptized in their church and joined them. Over several meetings with her brother and reading the materials I gave him to give her, she left the Mormon church. She was raised in a Christian home, home schooled and yet did not know what the Bible taught.

It is not so much the school a person goes to, but the school they see at home. It is the example of sharing their faith and making disciples that the parents provide or do not provide that makes the difference.

Then this is absolutely ridiculous. The state does not own our children. We should be able to homeschool if we so choose. Not everyone can afford to send their children to private school, and if you are in a city like Memphis, where I live, it's incredibly dangerous to send your children to public school.

Ever wonder why the US started compulsory education?

A city is what the people make it.

What we should be concerend with is that we are forced to tell our children about heavy issues before they are ready. I dont want my children knowing about homosexulaity yet. I dont want them knowing about anything sexual yet. Also there is to much focus on the arts and unnecessary things which get in the way of why they are really there. I am not going to throw my kids to the wolves.

gb93433 if you want to send your daughter to public school that is well within your right to do so. As far as I can tell no one has stated otherwise. You need to do a little more research into home schooling before you attack it as you have. Your statements are standard fare reflecting a standard ignorance of and bias against homeschooling. Please don't base your opinion of home schooling on these supposed bad examples that you have personally seen. The argument can be turned around very easily. Using your very logic I could easily build a case against the public school system. Don't send your kids there. Kids are shot there on a regular basis. The drop out rate at most schools is high. And, I could site example after example. Based on your logic, there's no way I'd send my kid to public school.

Never have I told anyone in my church to pull their children out of the public school. And, no one in this thread has said this. And, I too would have a problem with a preacher or anyone telling me that I'm harming my child by having him or her in the public school and that it's my Christian duty to pull him or her out and home school. So, don't get me wrong. This is about my personal choice. My wife and I feel that we can do better job in educating our child than the public school where we live. More so, we feel led of the Lord to home school. We do our best not to be critical of the public school, nor are we afraid of it. We are not afraid of evolution or even homosexuality, per se. Why? Before we pulled him out of the public school we were teaching him the truth. We were also teaching him discernment. Well, I digress. My point is that if a family believes they can do a better job then, by all means, they should be allowed to do so without undo influence from the government. Nor should they be prevented by doing so because of a few bad examples. If so, (again) then I turn the argument around. Comparing apples to apples there are many more cases of kids receiving a bad education in the public arena than there are of those taught at home.

Calif. home schoolers advised to ignore court ruling ... for now

"This is a fire-breathing dragon, a roaring lion -- but you know what? It doesn't have to be paid attention to," Thomasson remarks. "This has no statewide application. The state law still says that a child who is enrolled in a full-time private school with the teacher being capable of teaching is enough -- and that is the definition of home schooling."

Thomasson cautions the ruling pertains to only one family and is not an order for all home-schooling families to obey. But he has obvious concerns for the family involved.

"Appealing [the ruling] could produce a statewide ruling that has bad and stronger effect," the family advocate suggests. "Not appealing could mean that these parents are the sacrificial lamb, but everyone else is protected. So it's going to be a hard decision for the parents -- and I hope that they have much better legal counsel at this point than even before."

Thomasson says "whether homeschooling is done above ground or underground, it's still the best thing for children."

California case -- environmental law trumps property rights

senior fellow with the Competitive Enterprise Institute says the recent enforcement of a 1979 California law regarding solar panels will be a good litmus test for environmental laws.

You have no clue what my children know. And they most certainly do not. Nor is it approrpiate for them to know.

I am not arguing appropriateness at all. Would be great if they remained innocient. Don't become angry with me. Think back to your own childhood. When did you know something? I was a kid quite a long time before you, in a rural, conservative community where adults never talked about sex in any way ... and yet by the time I and my classmates were 8 we knew. I expect you did also, and I expect your children know more than you would like them to know. Gee, they grow up so fast. Enjoy every day, every minute of their childhood. The important thing is that you teach them well about sex, teach them morals, teach them in a Godly way ... but don't try to hide life from them. They have an uncanny ability of knowing when adults are hiding something, and they will find out. Best from you and your wife and not under the front porch.

I am not angry about anything. But your reasoning is fallacious. I always know what my kids know. As I talk with them daily.
