Obama is opposed to the Stupak amendment because he believes it changes the status quo on the abortion issue and restricts the practice of abortion. He doesn't want abortion to be an issue at all in this bill, neither in funding abortions nor restricting abortions. Others are trying to turn this bill into an abortion bill.

While I do not support abortions and do seek to see its practice restricted, I disagree with those who are trying to hijack the bill by turning it into a debate about abortion.

The ones who are turning the bill into a debate about abortion are those who have inserted Federally paid abortion services into the bill.

The reality is that there is no such insertion.

If you read the original bill, there are 16 occurrences of the word abortion. I read them all and you are free to search the pdf and read them yourself. All of them are there to ensure that the funding, legislation and offering of abortion services remain as they currently are, no more and no less.

The Stupak amendment that is being proposed and discussed seeks to add additional language to the bill to restrict the funding of abortions in any health care plan with the exception of rape, incest and endangering the life of the mother, essentially restricting the availability of abortions.

While that is something I personally would like to see happen, it is also hijacking this bill to make it about abortion.

    He's lying. As usual.

Every move he has made since he's been in office has been to change the status quo concerning abortion...to make it easier and more accessible.

Obam is a complete stranger to the truth.

Doesn't the scope of the bill expand coverage to include a greater number of persons who can thereby receive these abortion services?

Consider this from section 265 on page 162: "No funds authorized or appropriated by this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) may be used to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion, except in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, or unless the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest."

Note the word "except" and what follows after it. I take this to mean that funds could be used for those situations. Therefore this bill expands the federal government's support of abortion.

You are actually referring to the Stupak amendment that Obama opposes because he believes it restricts the availability of abortions and I believe hijacks the bill to make it about abortion. This paragraph is not in the original bill.

As of 5:00 PM today it is on page 160 of the bill from the link you provided.

Therefore, it is clear that the Congress intends to expand coverage for abortions with this bill.

Sorry, you are correct about the amendment being in the bill now. The thing is, this is the amendment that Obama opposes because he feels it restricts abortions and the OP is using his opposition to this amendment to say he is lying about not funding abortions.

    So which is it?

Is Obama supporting this amendment mean he is funding abortions or is Obama opposing this amendment mean he is funding abortions? You are saying the first thing while the OP is saying the opposite. Which is it?

I'm saying, right now, Congress has the words are in the bill to expand the coverage of abortion. So, if the President, signs it he will be supporting this expansion which would be contrary to what he promised.

Ok and that is in direct opposition to the OP which is claiming that Obama is lying about not funding abortion with this bill because he is opposed to this amendment. Obama has gone on record and agreed with you that this portion of the bill should be removed. I posted the quote above in post #2 of this thread.

The most important thing here is that this piece of legislation not make it into law because, unlike what some are claiming, it would expand federal support for abortions.

We will see whether or not Obama keeps his latest word on this subject.

Obama would like to see that amendment removed and the bill passed the way it was originally written, because he agrees with you that this bill should not be about abortion. Whether that happens or not is not up to him but the House of Representatives, but it seems like he'll do whatever he can to make sure this bill is not about abortion and gets passed in that way.
