WASHINGTON – In a historic vote for gay rights, the Senate agreed on Saturday to do away with the military's 17-year ban on openly gay troops and sent President Barack Obama legislation to overturn the Clinton era known as "don't ask, don't tell."

Obama was expected to sign the bill into law next week, although changes to military policy probably wouldn't take effect for at least several months. Under the bill, the president and his top military advisers must first certify that lifting the ban won't hurt troops' ability to fight. After that, the military would undergo a 60-day wait period.

Repeal would mean that, for the first time in American history, gays would be openly accepted by the armed forces and could acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out. More than 13,500 service members have been dismissed under the 1993 law.

"It is time to close this chapter in our history," Obama said in a statement. "It is time to recognize that sacrifice, valor and integrity are no more defined by sexual orientation than they are by race or gender, religion or creed."

The Senate voted 65-31 to pass the bill, with eight Republicans siding with 55 Democrats and two independents in favor of repeal. The House had passed an identical version of the bill, 250-175, earlier this week. Supporters hailed the senate vote as a major step forward for gay rights. Many activists hope that integrating openly gay troops within the military will lead to greater acceptance in the civilian world, as it did for blacks after President Harry Truman's 1948 executive order on equal treatment regardless of race in the military.

"The military remains the great equalizer," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. "Just like we did after President Truman desegregated the military, we'll someday look back and wonder what took Washington so long to fix it."

Sen. John McCain, Obama's GOP rival in 2008, led the opposition. Speaking on the Senate floor minutes before a crucial test vote, the Arizona Republican acknowledged he couldn't stop the bill. He blamed elite liberals with no military experience for pushing their social agenda on troops during wartime.

"They will do what is asked of them," McCain said of service members. "But don't think there won't be a great cost."

So much for the opinions of those actually fighting on the front lines. It's a sad day for our nation!

Why is it so important that homosexuals not be allowed in the military? Should they not be allowed to be government employees at all? Should we ban other kinds of sinners, too?

Would it be acceptable to you if the military had the men and the women housed in the same common barracks. Would it be ok if they utilized the same open showers, latrines, and other "personal" areas?

They have been allowed in the Military. They just had to stay in the closet and not promote themselves or their agenda.

The UCMJ prohibits sodomy... So, one concern is that this will put gay activists in a position to insist that the UCMJ ban would removed.

Also, of concern, is will a straight be able to "Code Red" a gay the same as when the opposite sex is too forward. Or, will, as I **have seen** in industry, the straight will get forced out of a job because of PC pressure on management.

Contrary to the statistics as portrayed by the Socialist Leftist Senate and the Liberal media 90 percent of COMBAT troops were against the repeal.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps says it *will* cause distractions that the "Brothers in Arms" do not need.

I am willing to bet that all the retired Military that supposedly support this did not actually serve in combat under fire or have become gay since leaving the military.

Lastly, consider how a group that has no sense of ethics, morality and the US Constitution will react when the regime in Washington orders them to fire on civilians or disarm law abiding citizens.

I doubt any of them would join Oath Keepers and actually plan to keep their oaths...

Sorry but this is a pandoras box plague that our Socialist senators have flung wide open on us...

Gotta wonder how the leaders of sodom and gommorah first reacted when gays started there???

Gotta wonder how long America has left when those that defend us are given over like this...

I believe Secretary of Defense Gates, a Republican, and the Joint Chiefs all were in favor of this move. I believe only the Marine Commandant was against it.

I am agings the [email protected] agenda, but I don't see how forcing someone to be "in the closet" in the military is the answer.

The best thing would be not to allow them to enlist in the first place.

The 'front line troops (actually in combat)' do not support it. The bean and bullets guys and gals (behind the lines) are more likely to support it. Personally I'd go with the ones who are really putting their butts on the line.

It's sad that our troops have to fight for the freedom of those who won't pledge the flag and expect them to serve next to a homosexual. Pathetic!!!

When a h0mosexual who has been legally married in a State or Commonwealth that permits such immorality, joins the military, he has his "spouse" will be entitled to live in govt housing, be permitted to travel overseas at Government expense be entitled to free medical care, and received all other benefiters afforded the wife of a solider.

And for the most part, GI's will not be able to speak out against h0mosesuals. I wonder when it will be "recommended" that Chaplains not preach on Romans 8?

As soon as the emporer signs this trash into law.

I give it about a month before we have our first chaplain court-martialled.

What Matt Wade said, plus this, should be *the* items up for discussion on this topic. Housing comes in two types of payments: Without dependents, and with dependents. When will we have the first add-on lawsuit because hom0sexual marriages aren't recognized, and therefore they aren't entitled to with dependent rates?

No surprises here. It pushes up the timetable for their movement. They'll have marriage legally recognized in most states soon enough. Probably about 5 years out. If President Obama gets re-elected, which is a big if, probably one the first pieces of legislation in his second term.

What has been the impact in the militaries of our NATO allies who have already done this?

Give me a break, dude. Just let it go. I don't pledge the flag in a worship service because I believe it is inappropriate and idolatrous. Just because I pledge allegiance to God's Kingdom instead of a part of Satan's domain does not mean I don't support the troops or pray for their safety. The fact that you seem to think my allegiance to Christ over country is sinful is very disturbing.

Besides, let's be honest, homosexuality is not the worst or most predominant of sins in the military. I think the accounts of soldiers' routine exploits speak for themselves. Having to serve next to a person who happens to be a homosexual isn't any worse than serving next to an adulterer.

One report I read indicated that preparedness was about a third of our troops...

And, actual combat efficiency was lower...

Wish I'd saved the link, now.

There are very few incidences among *our* troops as compared to any other force.

The few incidences we have had were blown way out of proportaion by a war hating communist media who carefully excluded data and carefully used words intended to incite against the Military.

Lastly, if you have never been a LEO at a domestic disturbance call and seen how people under emotional stress are somewhat difficult to deal with, you can't even imagine what being in combat with people shooting at you...

Multiply a Domestic Disturbance Call with Violence by ten, you *may* come close...

And, the battle doesn't stop in ones' mind just because there is a lull in the shooting.

It is all too easy to misidentify someone or something in combat when your nerves are on edge and everythings coming apart at the seams.

So, don't give me that trash about how "bad" our troops are!

It simply won't fly! At least NOT with me.

The military has been making a lot of changes in housing, especially for single personnel. I wonder if it was in part preparing for the possibility of hom0sexual SM? Click here for the info
