SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Law enforcement officers from around the country say they are increasingly concerned that video recordings of their interactions with the public are being used to show them in a negative light, creating a “YouTube effect” that is affecting how they do their jobs and, according to the FBI’s director, could be behind a recent rise in violent crime.

In a speech given Friday at the University of Chicago Law School, FBI Director James B. Comey said increased attention on police could be making officers less proactive and emboldening criminals.

“I don’t know whether that explains it entirely, but I do have a strong sense that some part of the explanation is a chill wind that has blown through American law enforcement over the last year,” Mr. Comey said, acknowledging that so far there are no data that back up the theory.

Okay so there's no data to back up that theory so let's do some fear mongering, that always works . . .

FBI Says Anarchists Plan to Attack Cops on Halloween

Anarchist groups often controlled by the state and used to demonize peaceful protesters

The FBI has issued an alert to police warning anarchists dressed in Halloween costumes plan to create disturbances and attack responding police.

The “Halloween Revolt,” according to the federal law enforcement agency, is planned by the National Liberation Militia, a group reportedly from Eugene, Oregon, and said to be responsible for violence in Seattle during the World Trade Organization conference in 1999.

According to the New York Post the group is calling for members to wear Halloween masks and use weapons such as bricks, bottles and firearms.

The FBI warning follows remarks made by FBI director James Comey. He said the “Ferguson Effect,” criminals emboldened by criticism of police following the shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri, has resulted in higher crime rates.

Others interpret Comey’s remarks delivered during a speech at the University of Chicago Law School as a reaction to political activism in response to police violence.

    < snip >

“The other dynamic of this so-called Ferguson effect is the notion that when people know their rights, they become dangerous criminals.”

If you video the police the anarchists will get you even if there is no data to back up this theory.

What was it we were told after the government admitted it was tracking and tracing our every move?

"If you've got nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about".

I'll bet Big Sis never dreamed when they came up with the slogan "if you see something say something" citizens would be snitching on the police.

It would seem Big Brother doesn't like to be treated the same as he treats everyone else.

Well, they have a point here - these youtubes are often heavily edited and can distort the true story by telling only part of the story but the MSM did that decades ago with Rodney King. There's not much you can do about stopping someone from taping you with their cellphone because nowadays privacy is out the window.

You are taped virtually everywhere you go for "safety reasons" that is also an invasion of your privacy. The government putting their cameras all over airports, schools and freeways was a pioneer in this, so if the cops don't like being videotaped, too bad - the government should be watched as well.

They may have a point about edited videos but that's not what this is about. The police are uncomfortable with the idea of being judged by the public instead of their peers.

National Media Misleads Readers by Validating “Halloween Revolt” by Alleged Anarchist Group

Reeling from its embarrassing accusation that citizens with cameras lead to an increase in homicide rates, the FBI now has a new announcement to make; that anarchists with masks plan to ambush cops on Halloween night.

The group of anarchists even has a name; the National Liberation Militia. And their planned ambush also has a name; the “Halloween Revolt.”

At least according to the New York Post, which broke the story Monday, claiming it received its information from an FBI press release.

However, not only is there no mention of this group on the FBI’s official website or no mention of the news on the FBI’s Facebook page, which they update frequently, there is no evidence anywhere this group even exists.

No Facebook page. No Youtube channel. And no mention in any prior news stories.

For an anarchist group with such a catchy, yet contradictory name, and such an ambitious, yet imminent plan, you would think they would market themselves more effectively.

    As they should be.

The public can never honestly and legally judge them. They have know way of relating to Graham vs. Connor. We have ample examples of that right here.

Again with the huge graphics? Do you think that changes anything? Look it's real simple cops who act like criminals are criminals. Cops who act like they are hiding something are hiding something. Why an educated guy like yourself can't figure that out is beyond my powers of comprehension. Third and fourth graders can easily understand it so why can't you?

Look at what the facts and evidence are telling you instead of what the "authorities" claim. Like in that "open season on police" article you posted. You remember it, the one that was shown to be so much baloney.

Just because some egg headed propagandist writes something you agree with doesn't make it true.

As of this writing, at least 974 citizens have been killed by police this year. And the only reason we know that is because citizens are compiling that information on a website called Killed by Police, basing their data on news stories where police have confirmed the killings.

Yet the FBI claims they are incapable of doing the same, apparently too busy monitoring the social media accounts of citizens trying to hold police accountable, turning a blind eye to viral stories like the ones mentioned above by not including them in their official reports.

In fact, the Washington Post determined the FBI reports about half of the police killings that take place, which is surprising they are even doing that, considering only 224 agencies out of 18,000 bothered to report any data to the feds at all.

The New York City Police Department, which is the largest law enforcement agency in the country, has not submitted any data to the FBI since 2006.

And it is their union boss, Patrick Lynch, who has been one of the most vocal critics against citizens with cameras, saying it was “insulting” that the New York Civil Liberties Union created an app in 2012 to allow citizens to record NYPD’s routine stop-and-frisk actions.

Maybe one could consider the "videos" an advertisement to (criticize, harass, kill ---) police. After all, ads DO work, as witness the $ for a 30 second ad at the Super Bowl.
Sure, the videos CAN expose some negligence and/or brutality, but the lack of "videoing" prior to an eposide rules out any pertinent info.
Just something to consider before a blanket condemnation of the "subject" w/no other evidence!
Oh, and if the pre is videoed, it brings up the question of intent, pre-meditation and planning????

The problem is there is no way to define "reasonable" that will fit all such situations. It is a fluid term. And all a LEO has to do is say "I feared for my life" and the "reasonable" standard has been met. And I find that to be unreasonable! There are times when such "fear" is, in itself, unreasonable. But most LEOs are unwilling to speak up and say they did not feel threatened in contradiction of another LEO's statement.

[rant]And this is NEVER going to change until some things get done.

    1. No more "internal investigations." The cops investigate the cops and decide the cops didn't do anything wrong! What nonsense! All investigations of misconduct have to be investigated by an impartial (no member related in any way to a LEO or LEA) citizens commission that has absolute authority to suspend, terminate, or prosecute a LEO offender.

    2. No more "qualified immunity." "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" should work both ways.

    3. No more LEO collective bargaining units forcing LEAs to reinstate a corrupt officer.

    4. Civil penalties should be paid out of officer's salaries and not out of tax payer coffers. And that would include union retirement funds and personal 401ks.

    5. Demilitarization of all LEOs and LEAs. If a LEO wants to play Army let him join the real Army. Training should, again, emphasize that LEOs are employees of the people. They are to serve the people. They are to protect the people. They are not to intimidate the people. They are not to milk the people (asset forfeiture without a conviction is nothing more than legalized armed robbery!) nor be a source of funding to a city, county, or state.[/rant] :)

By the way, it is interesting that this took place in San Antonio, which has the second most corrupt LEA in Texas, second only to Austin.

And if you want graphics, I have graphics. :D
