While the General himself couldn't make the nomination, all he needed to do was call a friendly congressman who had a slot available. The West Point wiki article says a nominee doesn't need to know the congressman. I read that to mean a potential nominees doesn't need to reside in the congress critters' district.

That is correct. But it's usually easier to get if you're in the Congressman's district.

True, but that was the General's problem not Mr. Carson's. Mr. Carson was taking General Westmoreland at his word. Mr. Carson had\has no reason to think the General's offer wasn't valid.

No he didn't. But that's still not what he expressed in his book. Telling it the way that he did in the book makes for a better narrative in a book. It makes for a lie if you're running for President.

And we've seen the splitting hairs over something that happened 50 years ago come to its natural end.

In some colleges and universities, when a significant figure states that you will be accepted it is, in fact, a done deal. Nothing would stand in the way. With a service academy, acceptance means you now have a full scholarship (plus monthly paycheck) to attend.

I'm not going to vote for Dr Carson anyways, but the Politico line on this is idiotic.

Actually it would be even easier than that. The Secretary of the Army has nomination privileges and General Westmoreland worked directly for Mr. Secretary Resor. And even if Secretary Resor declined to nominate, Carson's standing as ROTC Commanding Officer (Colonel) was sufficient for his ROTC Instructor/Supervisor to nominate him. (It was the ROTC Instructor/Supervisor who set up the meeting with General Westmoreland.) :)

No, you don't! You can't just make this stuff up as you go along! You fill out a Candidate Questionnaire which includes personal, medical, physical, and educational information.

Then you must register your appointment from either a representative in Congress, their two U.S. senators, the Secretary of the Army, or the vice president of the United States. Alternatively he could also be nominated via an ROTC Nomination made through his Professor of Military Science or Senior Instructor.

Well, it looks like the censors are at work on the Baptist Board again. Censorship is the first step to the death of the forum. :(

As I said before, (don't know where some of the replies went. Guess the board ate them lol). I've been through the process. There's a whole lot more to it than the nomination.

Didn't see your reply TC. I was giving the benefit of the doubt and assumed the board ate them lol.

The focus group in New Hampshire last night, all of them said they do not believe this ridiculous story that was clearly fabricated.

The key is Mr. Carson wasn't\isn't making up the story out of whole cloth. The details are a bit obscure. After all, Westmorland died in 2005.

That's a sign of a sociopathic, skilled liar. You exploit the obscurity so that you can obfuscate the real truth with a version of your own truth. Carson does this A LOT from what I'm seeing.
