Regular cannabis users 'at greater risk of mental illness'

Regular cannabis users are at greater risk of developing mental illness later in life, according to research.

One study found that the risk was seven times higher for heavy users, said Professor Robin Murray of the Institute of Psychiatry in London.

Speaking at the Royal College of Psychiatrists' annual conference in Edinburgh, he said: "In the last 18 months a number of studies have confirmed that cannabis consumption acts to increase later risk of schizophrenia. This research must not be ignored."

The findings come as the Government prepares to downgrade cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug next year.

Most people caught in possession of a small amount will have the drugs confiscated and receive a reprimand or warning, the Home Office has said.

According to a Government fact sheet, cannabis "can cause psychotic reactions amongst individuals with mental health problems", but it does not suggest use of the drug can prompt those problems.

For his study, Professor Murray reviewed research in Sweden, Holland and New Zealand.

A recent Dutch study of 4,000 people in the general population showed that those taking large amounts of cannabis were almost seven times more likely to have psychotic symptoms three years later.

Another study, in 1987, of 50,000 Swedish Army conscripts, found that those who admitted at age 18 to having taken cannabis on more than 50 occasions, were six times more likely to develop schizophrenia in the following 15 years.

Professor Murray said these findings had been largely ignored.

Anyone who smokes pot already has a mental illness: stupidity.

joshua, here you are lording over pot smokers for their sin of, and I quote, “stupidity”… Then I read in another thread where that you admonish a poster for their inability to accept sodomy as an acceptable lifestyle…. What book do you use to receive your instructions?….. I thought we were supposed to hate the sin, but love the sinner….

If stupidity is anything like being a fool, I would recommend that you read the Bible and find out what could be the penalty for someone that would call someone a fool……

I have a friend who developed Schitzoprenia as a teenager, then began smoking pot, his condition deteriorated to such a point that he had to be institutionalised. Many doctors concur that pot smoking can make mental illnes worse. I think that this research and its implications is often not considered fully by the pro legaling drugs groups.

    Two men smoking pot, stupidity.
    Two men having sex, okay.
    Incredible.
I am against pot by the way. I have a nephew who did smoke it and he is totally burned out now.

    Grace and Watchman,

I fail to see the logic in either of your posts. Is it so inconceivable to you that I can think homosexuality is not intrinsically sinful but think pot smoking is stupid?

Jumping off bridges is stupid onto concrete is stupid. Smoking tobacco is stupid. Driving at unsafe speeds is stupid. Smoking marijuana is stupid.

These are plainly evident. I do not think the same can be said of homosexuality.

I don't know, Josh. I've always considered it pretty stupid to defy God's Word!

I have a sign on the wall in my classroom (the same sign that used to hang behind my desk in the USAF, at just the right level that someone standing at attention in front of my desk had to gaze at the sign). The sign says,

LIFE IS HARD, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE STUPID.
