Tony Blair is being touted as the EU's first full-time president by new French leader Nicholas Sarkozy.

The Financial Times reports that Mr Sarkozy has discussed the idea with other heads of European countries, including German chancellor Angela Merkel, ahead of next week's summit in Berlin.

Number 10 aides confirmed to the paper that the idea had been suggested. But they said Blair had no interest in taking on a high-profile political job when he steps down as Prime

It's been said for some time that Blair had an eye on such a post. I think he has all the necessary qualities; a nice smile, double speak, dishonesty, an ability to twist facts, etc etc. Perfect.

Blair is pretty well respected in many places around the world. His ability to be everyone's friend, or at least appear to be so, is key in this.

Well, he is a tribal chief in one African Nation already. :) Only time will tell.

This appears to be on the same order as putting Clinton in charge of the UN. It is really an irrelevent organization.

What? The EU or the African nation?

I would call the UN inept, but not irrelevent. The EU does not have the same forces as the UN, but again, any group with an army is worth paying a little bit of attention to. Surely?

The UN is irrelevant. What actions do they take that makes then relevant? Aside from soaking up billions of American dollars and giving aid to rogue leaders against embargos.

Considering this irrelevant body was named 21 times in the Authorization for the use of Military Force against Iraq, while you might not find them to be relevant, it would seem someone finds them to be relevant.

Maybe irrelevent is not the right word. Maybe it is corrupt, inept, and an impediment to the national interests of the United States. I say move their sorry carcases to France.

Now that is something I would agree with whole-heartedly! Corrup, inept and so forth...
