What are your thoughts concerning Prozac? Do you know anyone who is taking it? What is the good/bad?
Anyone familiar with it? Please help.

I've known a couple of people who were on it. Unfortunately, one story ended in tragedy.

From what I understand, prolonged use alters the chemicals in the brain enough to eliminate the sense of right and wrong and enhances the feelings of suicide.

I am far from being a doctor, and I am sure there are success stories, but personally, I would stay away from it.

I had a close friend on Prozac (she has since stopped taking it). It certainly leveled out her moods and she had no feelings...she was a zombie and could only show one emotion. It is very addictive and she had to wean herself off of it very slowly.

    Happy on Prozac :D
    Sad on Prozac :D
    Mad on Prozac :D
    Anxious on Prozac :D

It covers the problem rather than solve it. I would recommend some other kind of medication.

I've been on it a couple of times for work-related stress and also during my divorce. No ill effects and it did the trick in terms of stabilising my moods, but it is no substitute for proper therapy to tackle the underlying issues, and can sometimes mask symptoms to the extent that you don't feel the need for therapy (although that wasn't the case with me).

    Yours in Christ

I know someone who was on it for a short period of time and it did what it was supposed to. It is great for helping with symptoms but not so good for curing the cause.

The brain get chemically off balanced just like the rest of the body does. We are made up of the earth and it had many chemicals in it. Our whole system works on chemicals. We know them better as harmons. If you are mad the body releases a harmone called adrinilene. This gives you the feeling of fight or flight. When you are petted and touched it causes dorfamines to release in the systom which makes you feel love, happy and relaxed. Even helps lessen the pain we feel. Dogs just love the feeling it gives when we pet them.
Prozac is one of several antidepressents avaliable to us today. All are good for the purpose they are intended and for the right person. Each antidepressent is made for different chemically imbalances in the brain. One may need the antidepressent Prozac and it work just fine for them. But for some it may have an adverse effect because it's not the chemical that is missing for this person. Same goes with things like Elival, Zoloft etc..
If you are thinking of trying Prozac for a chemical imbalance fine but, they will have to try you on several probably before finding the right one for you. If when you try it it gives you an abnormal feeling or thoughts that or not normal or right tell you doctor right away and dont take it any more. Write a journal of the types of antidepressents you try and the effects of each one has on you. This way the doctor can see that a certain chemical is not the right one. You shouldn't have to try one for longer than two weeks to see if it's working for you or not. And too, it may work for a month and then stop. So you need to stay intouch with your progress yourself. Take charge of your own program. You know your body better than anyone else. It should not make you feel high or low when given the right med. and in the right amount.
Most people that have to take these are not people with weekend problems. They are not intended for that use. These are for people who have sever depression lasting more than a few weeks with no reason for the depression. Manic depression is self destructive. They have found that suicide thoughts are one of the symtoms of true chemical depression. So that is the reason some people comitt suicide while taking an antidepressant. Be alert to you own body and how it feels and what it's needs are. You must be active in your own program simple because they can't know how you feel. Only the one feeling it can.

Many women are on Prozac and don't even know it! A lady at church told me she'd been put on Serafem to help even out her monthly moods. I looked it up because she was way too happy.... Prozac!

    No thank you.

Anti-depressants are designed to correct a chemical imbalance within the brain. They shouldn't be taken lightly, but neither should they be simply rejected. When the symptoms are indicating depression, they can be a real help.

I have experienced symptoms of depression over the last few years, and refused to recognize that fact. Eventually I tried a anti-depressant at my doctor's recommendation, and I found that it didn't make me feel abnormal at all.

I was afraid of the effects - but I was surprized to find my depressing thought patterns had stopped, and I was less negative in general. I went from desiring to withdraw from church and other activities to being back to the way I used to be a few years ago. I am again actively involved in my church and loving it.

I have friends who have had similar experiences and have had their lives restored by the correct usage of anti-depressants.

I was very hesitant to try that route because my mother abused Prozac in particular, along with other meds. It was a very trying time for my father and I. I was a hard sell, but I'm glad I decided to try.

I did a lot of research before I agreed to take an anti-depressant, and I was aware of my symptoms and the research into causes. I recommend anyone thinking of taking these drugs to do their own research to really understand what's going on in their lives. Any drug is not to be taken lightly, but responsibly.

Please don't ridicule those who benefit from these drugs.

My mom was on an anti-depressant to regulate her migraines. All I can remember of her for two years was her sleeping.

Prozac is a good drug - I've put many patients on it and the vast majority do well. Since all of the bad press it's gotten I generally use Lexapro, Effexor, or Zoloft these days.

Any antidepressant CAN cause unwanted side effects - these need to be monitored. Overall this class of drugs definitely does more good than harm.

And yes Sarafem IS Prozac! The patent ran out so they had to remarket to keep making money off of the drug!!

Funny thing is that Crystal Meth also helps alter the brain to provide the perfect mood.

It is just as unethical to control a person's mind through Prozac. I don't care if it is legal.

SSRI's are meant as a short term coping device while you learn the necessary tools to deal with whatever your problem is. Depression, OCD, etc. They were never meant to be taken for a lifetime. If you don't include therapy you shouldn't be allowed these medications.

Depression is a sin, not a medical problem to be fixed with a drug.

I don't believe we're beating this dead horse again!

DD: I hope you never tell a depressed person that it is a sin. It just might send them over the edge. They have enough to deal with!

Depression is NOT a sin if it's caused by a chemical imbalance.

It is not a sin to BE depressed. It may be a sin to STAY depressed - depending on what's causing it and if you get the help you need (whether that be spiritual or medical or both - which I prefer).

It's the old 'which came first' quandry.

Did the chemical imbalance cause the depression or did the depression cause the chemical imbalance?

I don't think it's been proven either way...

Sorry, depression is a sin. All the time actually.

Funny that Paul explicitly said that we are to focus our minds upon certain things - lovely, honorable, virtuous, etc. - and the God of peace will keep our minds and hearts through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Phil. 4

I realize it isn't kosher to insert Scripture on these discussions, as it hurts the arguments of those who wish to coddle and soothe those with their secret sin of depression.

Secret sin? Obviously you've never been around anyone who is depressed.

Trust me, everyone who is close to them knows about it!

Perhaps you need to be a little tighter with your judgements and a little looser with your compassion?

I will not hijack this thread any further. The OP did not ask if depression or taking medicine was a sin. He asked about Prozac...

It is a sin to take a drug to control the mind to cover up sin.

Btw, secret sin refers to the persons inability to see their OWN sin. It doesn't refer to whether or not others can see it.

That's simply crazy. you obviously have a simplified view of depression. Why don't you do a little research before making such declarations? Check out the definition of "clinical depression" while you're at it.

At least be somewhat knowledgeable on a subject before you make such statements.

Lets stop beating this dead horse.

That said. Clinical Depression is a MEDICAL CONDITION just like a cold, the flu, parkinsons, or cancer. It is not a sin to take an antibotic, and it is not a sin to takw an antidepressant.

Situational Depression can and is often caused by sin. Antidepressants are not prescribed for this type of depression.

Clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Antidepressants will help to control that imbalance. You may have to try several different ones over a period of many months to find the right one. The correct antidepressant will not make you a zombie, it will not have the same effect as crystal meth. What the correct antidepressant will do is to allow you to function as a normal person.

Now lets stop beating the dead horse.

Glory bound, I have done more research than you think I have. Also, I have researched the Scripture. I posted Scripture. You have offered nothing.

Bill, just because you can get a doctor to call a sin a medical condition, doesn't make it true.

What is the difference between Prozac and Crystal Meth? Prozac is legal. They both alter your mind.
