Would anyone be interested in working on a sort of collective story, just for giggles? This is something my friends and I have done before, as it allows everyone involved to tell part of a story. It doesn't matter if you consider yourself a writer or not. From what I've seen here, pretty much everyone possesses the ability to write quite well, so I think we could craft a fun story.

If anyone is interested, just let me know and we can discuss some ground rules for the story.

The rules we used among my friends were simple. Here they are, in no particular order.

    1. No actual people in the story. Use only made up names. We can use real places, but try not to use an actual person's house, office, etc.
    2. No using the line "So-and-so woke up, realizing it was all just a dream." This is an easy cop-out if you don't like the direction the story is going.
    3. No randomly killing off a character just to spite another author. Self-explanatory.
    4. No cursing.
    5. No sudden changes in tense. If the story is written in past tense, don't switch to present.
    6. No sudden changes in perspective. If the story is written in third person, don't switch to first person.
    7. No sudden changes in genre. If the story is set in the real world, don't just have a troll appear.
    8. No double-posting.
    9. Leave your post open-ended. This allows the next author to start where you left off.

I know the list sounds quite negative, but it does help to have guidelines.

Sounds good. Start the story ... or do you want to wait for others to indicate interest?

I'd kind of like to see if anyone else would be willing to play along. I've found an exercise like this works really well if you can get something like 5-8 people to play. You get a wide range of voices and ideas, but you don't have so many involved that it becomes clunky.

The last time I did this with friends, we write it over email, with one guy compiling the master story. Six of us were involved, and over the course of two week we wrote about 75 pages worth of material.

Charlie has just retired from the Army at age 37. He returned to his home of Boston. But after 20 years, he found that he did not know anyone from his youth that still lived in Boston. So he decided to buy a good vehicle and drive I-90 all the way to Seattle. Along the way, he will stop off and see some of his friends that he met during his days in the service.
His first decision was to buy a good vehicle for the trip. He considered buying a RV. He finally decided on a.....

...more domesticated vehicle being he had spent more than half his life and all his adult life under the control and influences of the military. Charlie understood that being a civilian was going to take some adjustments and being practical and organized he figured his RV should have a functional mess hall…err… nice kitchen so he could begin to learn how to cook his own food. As luck would have it he found the perfect civilian RV, although void of plated armor and bullet proof glass it had a kitchen and most of the other things like a bunk...err... bed and indoor plumbing he would need to begin his long trip.

So Charlie was off to see his friends, start his new life and maybe even find some companionship...

…see if by chance at the canine division there were any military dogs that were short on their DOD so he would have a best friend. His luck held and he found the perfect dog for civilian life but the DOD was three days earlier and the dog had still not processed out yet. Knowing the ropes Charlie went back to the PX and bought a couple cartons of Camel non-filters, paid off the clerks and managed to have Rambo processed out in less than an hour.

So the new friends were off again...

An hour or so down the road- he was getting ready to get on I-90; but then decided to spend the night at the Holiday Inn at Auburn, Mass. As he was taking his suitcase into his room, he noticed the man in the next room was a Marine. Gunny looked at him and his dog and said "What are you doing with MY dog".......

Charlie gave the Marine a quizzical look, "I just got the dog at..."

"At Fort Devens...I know. I left him there two days ago while I was on assignment."

Charlie slumped, "He had no tags or registration. His DOD was up and I had him processed out."

With this, the Marine seemed to grow angry. Charlie found this interesting, even though he wasn't looking for a fight. What really intrigued him was the way Rambo had yet to respond to the Marine. Charlie watched as the Marine walked toward him...

So Charlie pulled out his wallet and showed him his retired ID - Look Gunny, I am a retired First Sgt - So I outrank you - what do you think of that.....

Before the Gunny could reply, Rambo leapt into action, tackling the Marine and biting deeply into his arm. The Marine howled in surprise and pain. Charlie dropped his wallet and moved to pull the dog away.

The Gunny cried out for help. That was when the door to the next room down exploded outward and five more Marines poured out to confront Charlie and Rambo.

But Charlie, with a confident look remained calm, steel-eyed and with a Clint Eastwood like verbal growl he said, “This dog is part of bionic canine biogenetic military experiment and has taken down more than a dozen men in less than 60 seconds so unless you want to be screaming like your girlfriend there I’d suggest you stop where you are…Or do you punks feel lucky?” The hair on Rambo’s neck raised up and his eyes squinted; with that the marines stopped in their tracks and Charlie picked up his wallet and said, “I think we’ll go camping tonight Rambo”. So they got in the RV and headed down the road…

The Marines were not easily deterred, though. One man drove the Gunny to the hospital, but the other four piled into a humvee and began chasing after Charlie's RV.

Charlie did have one good friend from the Army living in Mass. Sgt Hogan was an MP, and now a Mass State trooper. And Charlie had his cell phone number. So Charlie started to call Sgt Hogan.....

But is was too late! The Humvee was pulling up on the passenger side of the RV. With a sigh and roll of the eyes, Charlie shifted his cigar to the right side of his mouth and out of the left side of his mouth he said, "Deal with it."

Rambo immediately jumped out the passenger window onto the hood the of the Humvee and head-butted the windshield bursting a large hole into it...

The driver of the humvee began to swerve violently left and right, but Rambo rammed the windshield again, shattering the entire pane of tempered glass and making his way into the cab of the humvee.

Charlie tucked his RV in behind the humvee and followed them down the long, deserted stretch of I-90, headed west. Up ahead, he saw a sign that read "Sturbridge - 12 Miles."

and in Sturbridge there is a major office of the PETA - and they have not had any major offenses lately. It just happened that the President of PETA was following Charlie and Gunny. So Paul of Peta decided to take action.....

...by driving his dilapidated Ford Galaxie directly into the back of Charlie's RV. Believing that the driver of the RV had maliciously thrown a dog out the passenger window, Paul of PETA was determined to bring him down.
