But intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the subject's sensitive nature, said the weapons were produced before the 1991 Gulf War and there is no evidence to date of chemical munitions manufactured since then. They said an assessment of the weapons concluded they are so degraded that they couldn't now be used as designed.
They probably would have been intended for chemical attacks during the Iran-Iraq War, said David Kay, who headed the U.S. weapons-hunting team in Iraq from 2003 until early 2004.
He said experts on Iraq's chemical weapons are in "almost 100 percent agreement" that sarin nerve agent produced from the 1980s would no longer be dangerous.
"It is less toxic than most things that Americans have under their kitchen sink at this point," Kay said.
And any of Iraq's 1980s-era mustard would produce burns, but it is unlikely to be lethal, Kay said.
Asked about the potential danger to U.S. troops, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said: "They are weapons of mass destruction. They are harmful to human beings. And they have been found."
The newly declassified military intelligence report was released Wednesday by National Intelligence Director John Negroponte. Santorum and Hoekstra had urged him to release the report this week during congressional debates on Iraq.
The senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee questioned the timing of the report's release. "What worries me is that the intelligence community — Ambassador Negroponte in particular — may be playing a partisan role in the 2006 election," California Rep. Jane Harman (news, bio, voting record) said.
Hoekstra said the document is not a "smoking gun." But he hinted that the chemical agents could be significant because they may have been added to the discovered artillery shells after the first Gulf War. He noted that one of the declassified findings says the munitions could be lethal.
"David Kay says anything produced prior to 1991 is not lethal anymore, so what is the discrepancy here?" Hoekstra said. "I am 100 percent sure if David Kay had the opportunity to look at the reports that describe these things, he would agree with the finding that ... these things are lethal and deadly."
Intelligence officials said the munitions were found in ones, twos and maybe slightly larger collections over the past couple of years. One official conceded that these pre-Gulf War weapons did not pose a threat to the U.S. military before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. They were not maintained or part of any organized program run by Iraqi leader There is no evidence that insurgents have found the chemical munitions. But one official said that insurgents have improvised conventional weapons, so they could apply similar creativity with the vintage weapons.

Personally, I haven't experienced being hypnotized by Rove, but evidently your have. :)

So, watch out! Since you are so easy to hypnotize, you may be unduly subject to influence by outside sources.

    Making Both Political Parties Angry

I don't know why some people are so upset by Carl Rove. The man is a political advisor, and he has helped Bush (etc) when several elections. He is good at his job as a political advisor and if I were running for office I would certainly want him on my team. The democrats don't like him because he is the one they blame for their recent political loses. Thus they are trying to take him down so he can't play a role in future elections. That is what is expected, it is part of the game of politics. What I can't understand is why average, everyday, normal people get so upset with him (unless they are die hard political junkies). The man does his job, what he is paid to do. What is that? Promote Bush and the republican party, and win elections.

    Now to the issues...

"since our base is easily fooled and they will parrot what we feed them through fox and rush and ann and so on and so on"

Political conservatives are no more easily fooled than political liberals. Both groups scholar in mindless acceptance of what their political leaders tell them (be it GW Bush, or, Howard Dean).

Btw, I think FOX news has made it clear that the weapons found were pre-91 weapons and were not the WMD the war was based on. I have heard it several times with my own ears (XM Radio). While some conservative hosts are trying to make too much out of this "find", most conservatives I am familiar with are not. As I said before (in another thread) everyone knew Saddam had these type weapons. So it is no surprise that they have been found. However these finds in no way support the pre war WMD claims. Let not the democrats rejoice however. Clinton used the WMD arguments during Operation Desert Fox. Now we know that Iraq had no active WMD program in the late ninties either. So this does not look good for either political party.

"There is no evidence that insurgents have found the chemical munitions"

And let's thank God for that. However two things to keep in mind...

    1. "No evidence" does not mean that they have not found any (or purchased any). It only means that we don't have any evidence that they have.

    2. Just because the terrorists have not found any of those old weapons to date, does not mean they will not. Thus the US and the Iraqi army need to find as much as they can, as soon as they can, before the terrorists get their hands on it.

My advice? Everyone should calm down and put down their KOOL-AID cups. The larger picture here makes sense though it does not help either political party (thus it makes both mad).

==Well, so much for proof reading...;)

    Yes, "win" is correct.

Those opposed to Bush and Rove dislike Rove because he is good at his job (for better or worse).

You knew Rove would try something, didn't you?

But this one is such a transparent scam that it's unlikely to convince anyone but the 30 percent ot so who still think Bush is competent and honest.
