The other day ago someone on FB criticizes my post as I was advertising a Christian book that had some psychology in it. I do not read this book for its spiritual content, but for its wisdom in relationships as it is very useful in this area and very well written. Many of the career books in my library also have Psychology, but I am not reading them for that, but for its wisdom in Resume building, cover letters, and ways to find a job. So should we avoid all books that feature psychology? Personally I believe that a diet of nothing but ice cream and candy will kill a man. But there is nothing wrong with on occasion eating some. Our meat and vegetables must be the Word of God. But a treat can be a motivational book.

See nothing wrong with Chrsitian couseling from a bible perspective, but the basic problem with whole area of psychology i thatat its basic premises, there is a deniel of real sin, and an avoidance of the Cross as solution to that sin!

I agree. In my area, there are a lot of good, solid Biblical counseling services run by some fine people. A spiritual element added makes all the difference. I have no use for a secular psychiatrist or psychologist.

Psychiatry and psychology are two different things.

Psychiatry deals with brains that do not fuction properly. All the talk therapy in the world will not heal bi polar or other major mental illness. Neither will Biblical therapy.

On the other hand, for talk therapy I prefer Biblical counselling.

Good point! think that main problem with Psychology is that it sees humans as 'animals', and that we are basically biological machines, minus a spiritual component, so of course no real sin, and thus no need to have a saviour!

There is a big difference between truly having something wrong with your brain and thought processes, and on the other hand, being too lazy to use the brain the Lord gave us.

Until the Lord saves us, and grants us the "Mind of Christ", being sinners before that happens, aren't we ALL mentally off to some degree though?

"Should we avoid all of psychology?"

Yes. It is man made and constantly changes, groping in the dark trying to heal. The motivation I believe is sincere, but there is only one truth that sets us free.

There's the deception, psychology is not based on the bible, even if you call it "Christian", it has different roots.

However, sometimes it might do a person good to check into one of their clinics.

What does the Bible teach a person should do they need help and are unable to help themselves? Focus on helping themselves or focus on helping others. When we love ourselves more than we love others, we sink into madness. Some say insanity is just another name for loneliness. What would the movie theater shooter tell us.

One of our main barriers to helping those with mental illness is that they can be dangerous to themselves and those they interact with. Thus the many "loners" who go round the bend.

Easy to diagnose, but to love the mentally ill is a challenge and a condemnation for to him who knows what to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

For redemption and the depravity of man yes I agree. For example some so called Christian ministries do not call pastors whom get into hardcore and eat allot sinners, or gluttons, but rather try and blame psycho-babble. I used o listen to their radio commercial garbage all the time as they broadcasted their conference to get these "pastors" better, and to heal them of their "past abuse." What garbage! What garbage!

But the book I bought is called the five love languages and it teaches how we can show others our love, and what our love language is. I do not find such a book to be bad, but perhaps I have missed something. However on the other hand certain career books that I have heard about focus on being an effective person, and such all in the name of human power, and not the power of the Holy Spirit and the scripture. Such career books are garbage.

Think that there is 'Bilblical counseling", but that requires the person to base their understanding upon how God said the state of man is in the Bible, not what secular psychology says that it is!

Basic difference can be seen here! was in a class studing 'Christian Therapy", and the Dr was giving to us a chart on just how we are to view mental approaches, and he stated that a good approach in treatment would be to tell someone committing multiple affairs to start counting down the frequency until finally stopping, miy suugestion to him was to have the person stop all right now!

I quit using non-Christian counseling when one of them told me, "You put too much importance on your church." That meant to me that I put too much importance on my beliefs.

I had a pastor for 20 years who had a Master's Degree in counseling, and he was very good at it. He was very adept at combining psychology with the Bible. Unfortunately, most pastors don't have that kind of education in psychology and just want to quote scripture at you.
