I think a sign in front of the church should show professionalism... and cute catchy phrases are sooooo cheesy, and not professional.

The sign should show the Basic info... along with a couple announcements if you have the room...

But don't use it to be cute... the community doesn't care if the church is cute or not...

The one I hate the most is CH_RCH with the U missing... and some cheesy slogan that goes along with it...

    PLEASE.... people are not ignorant!

I think the irreverence would be more noticeable in the US than in the UK. "Ass" here still means "donkey", although with the inflence of American films (movies) the word is sometimes used here in the offensive sense.

But the whole sign is unbiblical. Jesus was not "going to church" (a thoroughly unbiblical notion in itself, in my opinion - Christians don't go to church; they are the church). He went to Jerusalem to be crucified, to lay down His life a ransom for many. Luke 18.31-33:

31 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.
32 For He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon.
33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again."

The sign and others like it may be a clever play on words, but what do they mean to a non-Christian?

Here in England, there has for several years now been a campaign around Christmas to try and dissuade people from giving dogs as presents. The slogan used was: "A dog is for life, not just for Christmas." Someone thought that might make a good slogan for the Saviour, so we now have car stickers saying: "Jesus is for life, not just for Christmas." To a Christian, that's fine; our thoughts probably go to verses like John 10.10, where Jesus says:

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

But the unbeliever's thoughts would immediately go to the pet dog campaign, and with it, it idea of something cuddly, that we can give away if we don't want it any more, provided it goes to a good home!

I liked the pun and thought it was funny but it didn't feel right when I actually said it loud to my fiancee. Good humour but not the most appropriate thing.

    I agree funny but inappropriate.

I like clever signs that are in good taste though. One I liked, that I seen on a church here it said,

    (name of church)
"Under the same management for over 2000 years."
