According to this NY Times story, is this really a wise use of time for a believer?

The game allows that, yes. I do not participate i it, though.

It's a game, Greg. And an older one, at that. It is limited by size and structure, and cannot contain every nuance of life. True, the designers left some things open (multiple relationships, same sex relationships...sort of, yada yada yada), but these are things that you must pursue.

Of course you don't see the Sims in the game work. It's a game. A chance to step away from the mundane, and leave the cares of work behind. Otherwise, no one would want to play it. In fact, I have Sims who don't work. I have pumped up their resources, and they lead pampered lives of shopping and entertaining.

The Sims are like playing cards. You can play for enjoyment, or you can play for ulterior, sinister motives. It is your choice...but it is still a choice.

    Anyway, I enjoy playing it.

    In Christ,
    Trotter

I'm not trying to condemn you, Trotter. Honestly, I've never played the game, though I've seen it advertised. The links I posted were things I had read a while back and thought you folks who have played might find the commentary interesting/challenging.

I do wonder, though, how healthy it is to indulge our thought life/fantasies in this manner. As technology continues to develop, we will be faced with such questions. Is it okay to lead a life of virtual materialism, as opposed to say, virtual adultery?

It may be just a game- but the subject matter is far from harmless, in my estimation.

Greg, I see the game as a teaching tool. Nick got fired for not getting up early enough to make breakfast, shower, clean up, etc. and his car pool left him. You have to pay your bills before they go past due or your things are repossessed.

You even have to design your layout of your house, buy furniture and make sure you take time for eating, bathroom, making friends, etc.

It's just a big doll house. You can play it however you want. I play nice with my sims.

Nick has learned that if he takes an early morning job, he needs to make sure he's showered the night before, eaten a good supper and even rested in the afternoon. He found that paying a maid $10. a day to clean up is worth it if he can't get everything done before sleep time.

I always get the maid and the gardner. It's for sure worth it. I also do all the showering and such before bed time. That works much better.

What does the gardener do? The 'mother' has come over in the middle of the night and watered our flowers!

AhhH! A Sims thread! I'm hooked. I have Sims 1 and all the expansion packs and Sims 2...Sims 2 really isn't all it's cracked up to be. But I love sims 1. Oh, a money cheat.. you get 9,999,999 dollars (well, sim dollars)

Press CNTRL..SHIFT..and C at the same time, in the thing type rosebud, get your 1,000 sim dollars, then press cntrl, shift, and c again and type !;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!;!; keep typing it (or copy and paste it) to the end then but a slash (/) at the end and press enter, it will say "no such cheat" but if you keep pressing enter, look at your money and it's going up..!!!

We got really far and then lost our job. It ended the game and we saved it. Nick got a new job but before the next morning, the phone STILL rings saying he'd lost his job and the game ends again. Anyone know of a trick for PS2?

The game ends if you lose your job? Gee, that stinks. On the PC, you can go until you run out of money.

Yep. Once the job is gone, no matter how much money you have in the bank or how upgraded your home, you're done. Now that's the 'Get a Life' portion of the game.

We used the Freeall cheat and bought everything really neat for my 'girl'. Midas is another cheat all off the thread you provided. [IMG]

Yeah on the PC one you can get fired and just get a new job. Once I played my sim until he had all the skills filled up. That took forever without cheats.

NEVER SLEEP AGAIN! Buy a Electronic Bug Zapper and turn it on and touch it! After 3 or so times, your energy is full! I put one in the front and back yards. LOLOL Now if that only worked in REAL life!

Anybody know a cheat to up your social? I installed hot tubs in the front yard so when 'mom' or my friends come to visit, we all jump in and talk but as soon as they leave... social drops again!

Here's a good hint! Throw a party and as soon as you get your friends in the house, sell your doors and replace with walls so no one can leave! They'll need places to sleep if you keep them too long.
