    Disaster Preparedness:

Essential in all cases---- air, water, food......the rule of '3':
Air within 3 minutes. Water, survivial requires within 3 days. Food, can live without about 3 weeks.

Thereafter, consider what disasters are most likely to be a happening in your area of residence/work. What options are most likely: Shelter in place? Evacuate to safer area? Temporary move to family or friends?

If food and water are necessary for typical disasters in one's area, chances are there is also the need for filled prescriptions which are necessary for the stabilization of health conditions such as diabetes or blood pressure control; How about fuel supplies, utility disruptions? Tools for clearing, building and repairs? First aid book and kit and OTC meds for nusiance symptoms like headaches and pains, diarrhea, indigestion, instant heat packs and instant cold packs, antiseptic and antibacterial salves, protective sterile coverings, applicators, adhesive.... and duct tape.

For a major and incomprehensible disaster, it would be difficult, if not impossible to stock pile enough water for more than a few weeks to a few months... What do you know about survivial methods of getting water? Catching and purifying rain water? Condenseing water overnite if located in a high humidty area (sometimes even possible in arid conditions depending on season)? Limitations on drawn and saved water being free of bacteria if stored over time..... and the use of disinfection agents such as fragrance free chlorine bleach (if I recall correctly 5 gtts/gal.... 5 drops per gallon).....and having bleach available for emergencies.

How much water per person per day: Many authorities say a minimum of 3 gals per person per day for drinking and hygiene: But consider, in the worse case senario, 1/2 gal for drinking.... and skip the hygiene....... or find other ways to improvise for hygiene i.e. lotion, or alcohol wipes, or dilute bleach water dips. Canned food contains water, but the salt content may also be high. However the water content of canned food may apply as part of the nutritional requirement for water during a shortage and personal rationing.

Dehydrated foods will require water to reconstitute. Canned food is usually safe to eat straight from the can if cooking is difficult to impossible. Other staples like dried beans, rice, grain products, require water and usually cooking. Sprouting for fresh greens requires fresh water rinses and cleanliness which may not be practical. If one is not accustom to beans or grains in their diet then a sudden change because that is all one has on hand, may be difficult for the digestive system. Consider vitamins and minerals suppliments substitutes for normally available in fresh foods. Lemon juice and citrus juices have limited can life.... but may make up part of fluid requirements and reduce the chances of scurvy.

If such ever presents itself, consider saving large cans as they are emptied: They may be recycled for projects like growing your own food, if one lives in an apartment or place with limited grow area. Seeds for gardens take up little space and can be stored in refrigerator or freezer: Make sure they are of current date and from reliable source. (This is a great project to teach children, growing a small garden, and seed starting and seed saving.)

If a major disaster hits, consider the possiblity that government response may be delayed or totally inadequate. Christians, who read and believe the Bible, know of the warnings that in the last days times will be more difficult for all, and that we will be passing through some fires of testing: However, in whatever manner we feel led to 'prepare' for such times, we do it because we believe the words of God will come to pass..... not because we fear, but because we trust Him, and he has shared his plans with us to encourage us and to enable us to be prepared to minister to others in both the carnal things and the spiritual things, so that some may believe and be saved by the witness of our faith in action. More diligent, then, should be our study and knowledge of Scripture and regular our communion with God daily so that he can use us now and use us then....for such a day when others are aware of their need.

I remember and am humbled by one caveat:
Man makes his plans, and God laughs.
But I know, whatever preparations are in the will of God, it will bear fruit.
