Who on BB takes their bible with them to church? In the ORBs I go to, no one that I am aware of takes their's with them to church. Where did this habit/custom start? The Sovereign Grace Association of ORBs take their's with them, but this is the only ones I know of in the ORB assoc's. If you do take yours, why do you? If you don't, why don't you take it? I guess m my reason is through habit/tradition. I see nothing wrong with doing this, I was just wondering if anyone can expound on the subject. Thanks!!

I have my bible with me every Sunday at church.

I also want my church members to bring their own bibles with them so that they can interact with the text in both Sunday School and during the sermon. I do not want them to take my word for it, but I want them to see it for themselves in the text.

I take mine. My wife takes hers. My kids take theirs.

In every message I preach, before I read the Bible passage, I have everyone hold up their Bibles. No one wants to be left out.

Then, I ask everyone to call out their page number. (Some still feel kinda guilty when they do this. They've been told for years to be quiet in church, and now I'm asking them to speak up.)

Well, how could there be anything wrong with bringing your Bible to church. I do not know how or when it started but being it has never been practiced in a denomination, if you start carrying one then you are going to stand out among the congregation. You will never hear an objection from this preacher but think you will from plenty of others, only because its strange to them, not that they would think it is wrong.

I have been SBC, AOG, N, PH, MBC, Q, and who knows what else. I have always taken a Bible if I have had one.

RE: Taking your bible to church?

I just thought of another reason why I don't take my bible with me to church. I am SOOOOO absent minded, I just might forget it at church. I have at least 4 bibles, but I like two better than the other two. I guess that since no one else carries theirs, I leave mine at home. That may be a sorry reason, but it is my only valid reason!

We go to an Independent Baptist Church. The church provides Bibles in the pews for those that do not bring their own Bibles, but most of us bring our own. I prefer to bring my own due to my comfort and familiarity with it. It is benedficial to have a Bible to follow along with and to see what is being preached.

I have three Bibles that are identical. I actually keep one copy at church in my pew (the others are on my desk and at work), because I am also absent minded.

Most Americans have the money to spare, it isn't much to buy multiple copies and to have one at church.

I don't bring my Bible to church.

    ***gasp****

    And I am a pastor...

    But...

I keep one Bible at church on the pulpit...

One in the classroom where I teach...

And about 15 in my office at church!

Actually, apart from my daily devotions..(which is a NLT) I rarely read a printed version. Most of my studying is done on e-sword... there is just something I like about the computer version.

I know... Go ahead and say it... I'm a nerd!

Please don't tell me that you get upset when people sit in your pew.

There are bibles in our pews also so I don't bother to take a bible to church except on the rare occasion we attend Sunday School. Or there is a Sermon I like, and I studied prior using my own bible. I often carry my wife's purse around to help her so I don't need anything else to drag along.

Actually I take several Bibles with me to church - also take some Bible dictionaries, commentaries ..... Pocket Computers are wonderful.

Showed up one night for prayer meeting and everyone was breaking out their Bibles, the pastor turned to me and said, "Can I get you a Bible?" to which I replied, "No thanks I have several."

People don't sit in my pew.

99% I am either the first or second person there to get the church ready for the service. On the few occassions that I am not there first or second, most of us have usual spots and don't stray to far. Since I sit close to the front, I think there has only been one occassion in five years where a visitor has used "my" pew. Honestly, it isn't a big deal, just a habit, like sitting in a certain chair at the kitchen table.

Need some Right Guard? Maybe that is why it is called a pew...

Oh, brother... you fell into that one!!! Don't get mad.. .get glad!

Seriously, you know why they call them pews?

    People sit there...
    They soak in the sermon...
But because they are hearers only, and not doers.. they end up souring... like an old sponge....

Ever smell an old sponge that has soured? PEW!!!!

    Now that'll preach!

Christians are not called to sit, soak, and sour!

This is similar to what several of my pastors have said to our congregation. It's good advice.

At our church, you bring your own Bible. I don't put the Scripture on the screen and our pastor tells us OFTEN "Circle that word in your Bible", "Underline that", etc. I like to write notes as we go through the Word so I NEED my Bible! I can't imagine going to church without it. I have it in a small bag that will also hold all my children's papers when they're done with Sunday School along with anything else that needs to come home. :D

I love to take my Bible to church (so I can write in the margins the date the preacher preached that passage, to check up on him, like the old women do lol). I love to underline meaningful things in my Bible and have it handy to look up other things that come into my mind as I am listening to the sermon.

When I teach my youth at church, I usually copy, cut and paste the passage and put it on a handout, because despite a reward system, most of the kids dont bring their Bibles to church, and I want them to read the passage, not just hear it.

At school, I use my Abeka printed Authorized KJV only, as we are not allowed to teach from a personal study Bible. And they do Bible checks at school chapel services, too.

I take a Bible in with me when I can attend services (my Sundays have kept me out of a service for about two months now.) Usually I take a NET, HCSB, or NKJV.

I have about ten translations in my office so I pick whatever I'm in the mood for and roll on in. We put the passages up on the screen (since we are focusing on unchurched and dechurched people) but the constant reminder is to turn in your particular copy, circle a word here, underline there, and so forth. We are strict biblicists who have a high view of Scripture, it comes through in our preaching and teaching. Most of our regulars will bring their personal copy, either in print or in electronic format (this is happening more and more.)

    Good conservation :)

Did you make the people sitting in "your" pew move? If you did, don't tell me because I might beat you up.
