Terrorism charges lodged against protesters at GOP convention

Prosecutors in Ramsey County, Minn., have formally charged eight alleged leaders of the RNC Welcoming Committee -- one of the groups organizing protests at the GOP convention in St. Paul -- with terrorism-related charges, The Times' P.J. Huffstutter reports.

Monica Bicking, Eryn Trimmer, Luce Guillen Givins, Erik Oseland, Nathanael Secor, Robert Czernik, Garrett Fitzgerald and Max Spector, face up to 7 1/2 years in prison under the terrorism enhancement charge, which allows for a 50% increase in the maximum penalty they could face.

It appears to be the first time criminal charges have been filed under the 2002 Minnesota version of the federal Patriot Act.

The RNC Welcoming Committee is a self-described anarchist group that has worked for months planning disruptions at the convention. Police blamed the group for sparking violence during Monday's antiwar protest in St. Paul. Although most of the estimated 10,000 people at the march were peaceful, police say a splinter group of about 200 people harassed delegates, smashed windows and started at least one fire.

Police have arrested nearly 300 people during the confrontations this week, according to the Associated Press. Huffstutter reported on the protests for the blog Tuesday. And this morning, we told the story of journalist Amy Goodman's arrest at Monday's march.

I haven't followed this in the news. I briefly heard something right before I had to run out of the house all day. But I heard soemthing about Ron Paul's people and something about weapons and seeking to what, cause disturbances or something to that effect. Is this related, or not related? And does anyone know any more about that?

It was Ron Paul folks and they were breaking windows, spraying bleach and urine on convention goers. Clearly this was domestic terrorism much in the same vane as the KKK.

I wouldnt pin their behavior on RP. But it was some of his supporters. And he does draw this kind of supporters in a much larger way than any one else.

You do have some links to "credible" sources to back up these allegations, right? Let's see em.

I expect only silence from you now Rev so if you would be so kind as to prove me wrong I'd appreciate it. ;)

It is posted all over the news every night. Watch the tube. They are there with their signs in tow. And by the way I am not the only one who has seen it.

Then it shouldn't be any problem for you to post a couple links then right?

I've been told posting links to back up statements here on BB is required posting "etiquette"...by a BB mod. Or does this "etiquette" only apply to certain people?

How about it mods? Does this "posting etiquette" apply to everyone here or just certain people?

Is that supposed to prove Ron Paul supporters or protesters in general are terrorists??? Because they carry signs?

Ah but, your the one making the statement.

I also would like to see evidence that it was Ron Paul supporters doing this. That is quite claim to make without substantiation.

Thanks Rev, I read through them quickly so maybe I missed where the RNC Welcoming Committee were Ron Paul supporters.

They described themselves as anarchists. I would appreciate just a snippet to show they supported Ron Paul.

You are welcome. Who do anarchists support? McCain? Obama? Also I described what I saw on the news. If my anecdotal example is somehow off base then how does that idea line up with every other anecdotal example used on this board?

So you don't have any actual evidence that these anarchists were Ron Paul supporters?

Well, then it ought to be easy enough to show us.

I don't doubt what you heard, but I truly do doubt the source who claimed it.

Besides, Fox is not like the rest, the would NEVER sensationalise a story,

It wasnt a statement. it was video I persoanlly saw. Those who were nvolved with this were holding signs that said "Ron Paul" and getting in the face of a fox reporter who was trying to ask them questions.

Again who do anarchists support For President? If you look at what these anarchists are saying on these links poncho parrots them perfectly every time he posts. The "RNC Welcoming Comittee" are clearly Ron Paul supporters. Although it appears to be only a few of them that took part in the fluids and glass breaking.

I guess I gave you more credti than you were due. So now the truth - you have lumped all protesters into the category of terrorists. "Getting in a reporter's face" is hardly terrorism. I contend that anarchists would supports the CPUSA or the Socialist Workers Party. Prove that any Ron Paul supporters were involved in the glass breaking and fluids. I doubt you will be able to do that.

You have no proof for your charge, only your own conjecture.

    Thank you for clarifying that.

First, I did not lump all protestors into categories as terrorists. I in fact in my very last post said "Although it appears to be only a few of them that took part in the fluids and glass breaking." So I would appreciate your admitted correction on that.

Second, I did not say that "getting in a reporters face" was terrorism. You are putting words in my mouth. I simply stated the circumstances that surrounded those in the video.

You can discount Fox News all you want. But refrain from twisting what I have said.
