I know there are several of us who have been on a diet, are on a diet, are starting on a diet, wishing we had the will power to start a diet, giving up on a diet.

We have had 'weight threads' but we seem to lose interest and they disappear.

I think we need to encourage each other and also to give each other little tips we have discovered to help keep us on the path to losing weight.

I seem to have hit a plateau and it is depressing. My husband is very thin and he does not see my weight as a problem...so no help there.

Anyone willing to 'stand in the gap'? I need some 'shoring up' right now. I don't want to give up after losing only 16#...

Sue, it is quite common apparently to reach a plateau when losing weight. You are doing great, so now is definitely not the time to give up. It is only a temporary hiccup, I am sure. Just think of the energy you are using up with all this window washing [IMG]

    Sue,

If you have hit a plateau sometimes you need to add some lean muscle mass. Get some dumbells and start some light weight training (also helps give a more toned look) If you are not doing much cardio work, add a walk to your daily routine, or get a pilates tape and give that a try.

The other thing I would suggest is to look in your diet for hidden sugars - usually in processed foods and try to eliminate as many as possible.

My own eating has become less disclplined as the year has gone on, I lost 40 pretty quickly (four months) and have maintained in the 210-215 lb range (I am 6'4) fairly well, but I really have to watch or the weight comes back. I work out five days a week cardio and weights- usually very early, it is the only time of day that is truly mine.

    Thanks Sheila and Jimmy!

I get plenty of exercise cleaning house, doing the crosswalk twice a day etc., but I know it is not the right KIND of exercise.

I will get back on track, just hit a slump I guess. :(

Sue, I have been on a low fat diet for about 2 weeks now. I have lost 10 pounds in two weeks. I walk about 2 miles a day. Walking is great way of exercise. My goal is to drop 50 pounds more by Jan. I am feeling a difference in my energy levels. I eat small portions, and a big key to any diet is DRINK WATER. God Bless [IMG]

Just started the Atkins diet yesterday and things are going well so far... except I'm really craving carbs!

I understand that these cravings should subside in a few days so I'm not too worried. I have a fair amount of self-disciple when it comes to food and the Atkins diet allows you to consume fat, so I don't expect to have that much difficulty staying with it.

    Anyone have any advice?

    Baptist Believer,

I am doing Atkins as well - and it has turned into a lifestyle (although every once in a while krispy kreme calls my name to loudly!)

The easiest way for me to beat some of the carb cravings - and for me it is a sweet after dinner, it to buy sugar free jello and top it with readi whip. I dont really miss the bread, pasta or rice, and I satisfy my french fry cravings by charging my kids a french fry tax of one fry when we hit the fast food dens.

Stay very strict for 2 weeks to a month and you will start to see some great results.

Sue don't give up or get discouraged with your dieting. I too am on a diet. I hit a plateau at 14 lbs. and like you I got discouraged. But, a friend told me in the beginning of my diet to use a tape measure and measure every thing on my body! When I asked why, she said that I would reach a point of stagnation in my diet, plateau at some point. She said even though I may not be losing lbs, I might be losing inches! She was right, at 14 lbs. I started using a measuring tape instead of a scale. It might only be an 1/8 to 1/4 inch difference here or there but it gives me the courage and stamina to wait for the lbs. to disapear.

Right now I am at a 28 lb. plateau. Am I discouraged? Nope, just hunting for that tape measure. Oh and Sue, if you pull it tighter each time the inches will be greater. Well, not around your head but in other areas!!! We should always strive to keep our big heads and mouth's for future use!!! :D
Yes, yes, yes I know that's cheating, BUT IT WORKS for me!!!

    Sue,

16 pounds is great! Way to go! Just keep up what you are doing and it will start coming off again soon.

I agree with GloryBound about measuring. Sometimes you won't see a drop in pounds because, while you are losing fat, you are gaining muscle (if you exercise) which is a good thing because the more lean muscle tissue you have the more fat you burn. It's a great trade off.

I have just started dieting (again  ) and I really, really want to stick with it this time! I'm one week into it and I'm 3 pounds closer to my goal.

I got some workout tapes, but boy do I feel like an idiot trying to keep up with the instructors on them! [IMG] [IMG] Thankfully I can do them when no one else is home (except the little ones and they're too young to realize how bad I'm doing)! [IMG]

That craving will go away. I don't miss potatoes, pasta, and bread now.

If you don't like pork rinds...learn to like them. They will be your best friend!

I keep a bag at my desk and munch on them when I feel tempted to cheat.

    PORK RINDS HAVE ZERO CARBS

Here are three web sites with low carb recipes.

Thanks for all the encouragement, advice, tips, and suggestions everyone!

    Let's stick together!

    It's probably just water weight!

Instead of slapping yourself...give yourself a hug. It works better! [IMG]

OK. Check in time! How is everyone doing?

    Not so good?

    Great?

    Gained some weight back?

    Lost some more weight?

Hit a plateau, but still hanging in there?

I went on my first diet earlier this year.
I lost 22 lbs (211 to 189 lbs) and have remained stuck at the 188 mark for a month.
Admittedly I'm in the maintenance phase now so I do eat carbs, just not too many.
    No potatoes or bread generally.

I have inspired a few people in our church to loose weight.
Our Chairman of the deacon's is doing Adkins now.

Keep up the good work everyone.

I FINALLY got unstuck from the 16# plateau and I have lost 19#!

Just one more pound to go to reach the coveted 20# mark! Then it will be on to another 15 # loss and I will try to maintain that.

My goal was to lose 35# and I am more than halfway there!

    Woo Hoo!

Keep up the good work people! I am proud of all of you!
