Just saw the Gospel of John movie using the Good News bible as the script. I thought that this "translation" had disappeared years ago. Any opinions?

Isn't that the TEV Todays English Version. My understanding is that it was a translation done so that the average reader of a sixth grade level who is a non-believer could understand. They don't use any latinism such as words that end in tion.

I don't care much for it myself, but if you want to know what it is like, you should be able to buy a used copy of it for twenty-five or fifty cents in a thrift store and read it for yourself. [IMG]

dunno abt the Latinism bit. but the making of the TEV is detailed in Nida's book Good News for Everyone. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0876807929/kjb1611biblevsmo

the TEV happens to be one of the first bibles that are consistently translated according to a stated philosophy, namely closest natural equivalence. today, that's called Meaning-based translation.
