People who want to wear hyphens in defining who they are need to go back where they came from if it's so great. Otherwise, shut up and assimilate in the big melting pot.

That's cool, Ed! My family is a mixed bag as well including a couple of those you mentioned and several more!

We're all American now but we do have an assortment of origins and affiliations of which we're certainly not ashamed. We make note of those whenever the venue is appropriate but we do not do so to snub others or the nation to which we're loyal.

I will say that I enjoy telling Yankees I'm from Texas and regard the South to be far more aligned to the original intents of America!

Ed notes that the name: tragic_pizza, isn't hypenated
    that is an underscore :godisgood:

    underscore, hyphen: _-

    -Ed, the Great-American!

Right....He was obviously referring to our modern day American society with citizens of every skin tone and ethnicity, and not the Americans of yore.

As for yourself where are you going to tell the hyphenated Americans to go, if they already "come" from here? For pity's sake there is nothing wrong with having a self identity. For the most part, it does nothing to effect the "unity" of this country. there may be a few instances, but they are few and far between.

The most entertaining part of LE's rant about how hyphenated-Americans "need to go back where they came from" is that the vast majority of these individuals came from America!

Still waiting on her to share the verse and chapter where it's OK to say this, and tell them to "shut up and assimilate." I'm sure it must be in the Bible somewhere.

Rather than focusing on LE's rant, what do you think about John Wayne's rant or Teddy Roosevelt's? Were they misguided in their understanding of what it meant to be an American?

John Wayne- Yes, he was misguided, not to mention the fact he was an entertainer, and certainly not someone to which I would ascribe profound political or ideological views.

T.R.- No, but he was not referring to hyphenated Americans who HAVE already assimlated into the American culture,i.e., naturalized Americans. These are two separate issues.

Entertainers have significant sway over affecting a peoples political beliefs. However, John Wayne was far more than an entertainer. He held strident anti-communist views and was active in defending Americanism and was active in his support for the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities. This activism was reflected as well in the production of his movies that had a distinctive pro-American slant.

He spoke positively towards naturalized or assimilated Americans. It's the individuals that maintained an allegiance to another country or continent (the hyphenated ones) that he was speaking against.

I would say this depends on what you mean by unity. Unity of thought? Absolutely not. The best new ideas come from independent thinkers, not from those in lockstep to any philosophy or way of thinking. Unity of opinion? No again. The country is best served by an open dialog and evaluation of various options. Like a patchwork quilt, there can indeed be functional unity with each part retaining its own identity and history.

First off, what kind of world did Teddy Roosevelt live in?

Second, who gives a handful of warm spit about what some dead actor thinks about anything?

    A forgotten one.

    How crude.

Again, he was misguided, and an entertainer, a sub-par one imo, as well. Being active in the support of the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities is certainly not something I support in thought or deed. Our country would have been far better off without McCarthyism. We have freedom of thought in this country and HUAC refused to recognize such thoughts, not to mention the people who were blacklisted over such nonsense.

Again he was speaking of unassimlated immigrants, not hyphenated Americans who are assimilated into the American culture but still maintain self identity. Apples and Oranges. What hyphenated Americans today maintain allegiance to another country and continent?

    McCarthy was right.

As a starting point we can talk about those that call themselves Mexican-Americans, fly the Mexican flag on U.S. soil, are members of Mecha and La Raza and feel quite confident that it is their destiny to "reconquer" the American SouthWest.

Here's a "Mexican-American" that might be in need of becoming naturalized...

"The border remains a military zone. We remain a hunted people. Now you think you have a destiny to fulfill in the land that historically has been ours for forty thousand years. And we're a new Mestizo nation. And they want us to discuss civil rights. Civil rights. What law made by white men to oppress all of us of color, female and male. This is our homeland. We cannot - we will not- and we must not be made illegal in our own homeland. We are not immigrants that came from another country to another country. We are migrants, free to travel the length and breadth of the Americas because we belong here. We are millions. We just have to survive. We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. It's a matter of time. The explosion is in our population." - Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez
