I picked this one up last night for about $7.00 . It's a Roman Catholic Bible and comes with extra-cononical uninspired books . I haven't taken the time to investigate the notes . They are probably liberal . Those notes are sure extensive though . It's common for barely more than the actual text of a chapter to be spread out on two pages . I'll give my thoughts on selected quotes from the notes at a later time .
For now I'll give some selected snippets .

1 Peter 4:15 : But let no one among you be made to suffer as a ... or as an intrigurer .
1 Peter 5:5 : -- be subject to the presbyters
1 Peter 4:4 : They are surprised that you do not plunge into the same swamp of profligacy , and they vilify you .
2 Peter 2:18 : For talking empty bombast . Jude 16 "utter bombast"
    In 1 John 2:2 ; 4:10 ; and Romans 3:25 "expiation" is used .

Matthew 21:16 : Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings
Matthew 22:12 : But he was reduced to silence
In a number of places ( Matt. 26:71 ; Acts 2:22 etc. ) "Jesus the Nazorean" is used .
Luke 14:2 : a man suffering from dropsy

John 1:13 : who was born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God .
John 3:16 : For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son , so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life .
John 17:5 : Now glorify me , Father , with you , with the glory that I had with you before the world began .

Acts 17:11 : These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonia

Romans 1:24 : Therefore , God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies .
Romans 3:3 : What if some were unfaithful ? Will their infidelity nullify the fidelity of God ?
Romans 3:23 : all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God .
Romans 8:30 : And those he predestined he also called ; and those he called he also justified ; and those he justified he also glorified .
Romans 9:16 : So it depends not on a person's will or exertion but upon God , who shows mercy .
Romans 11:33 : Oh , the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God ! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways !

Throughout the words "holy Spirit" are used . The word "holy" is not capitalized . I guess the translators figure it is an adjective not needing capitlization .

The language is kind of flowery -- so those who are familiar with KJV phraselogy would be in the groove with this translation in that respect . Of course having the Vatican authorize it is not impressive to Protestants .

I would say that for the most part the text maintains the orthodox-line on biblical teachings . It seems to be mildly dynamic -- a little more formally equivalent than the NIV . So it is more to the left on that scale where to the extreme left you will find interlinears . The NJB and the REB are more to the right keeping company with the NLTse .

I'll have more observations at a later time . Meanwhile , if any of you own this particular translation , please weigh in with your opinions .

The notes are interesting. You should really get a kick out of the into notes and the study notes for Daniel.

BTW, you should have the edition with the revised New Testament (1986).

My main reason for having a copy of this Bible was due to a desire to read the extra-cononical uninspired books. It is easy to see why they are not in our Bibles. Check out Sirach 3:1-5 and 3:29.

Like you, I found a deal on a paperback copy. Overall I don't think it is too bad of a Bible after you strip out the Apocrypha. Here is an interesting link to a short history of the version http://www.bible-researcher.com/nab.html I'm not vouching for the accuracy of the information at this link.

    Rippon....

I mean the following as a compliment:

I need to get with you about time management, man. You manage to read and evaluate more than I ever get to!

I do good to read my NIV and ESV as much as I should...much less get to different versions and commentaries!

The NAB Has An ESV-Like Style; Not NIVish

Snippets will follow from the book of Isaiah.

    1:9
had left us a scanty remnant

    1:11
What care I for the number of your sacrifices?

    1:31
The strong man shall turn to tow

    3:11
    All goes ill

    3:24
    And for the coiffure,baldness

    4:4
with a blast of searing judgment

    5:7
    but hark, the outcry

    5:18
    cords of perversity

    9:5
They name him Wonder-Counselor,God-Hero,Father-Forever,Prince of Peace

    10:22
    as overwhelming justice demands
[The NAB rightly has translated the Hebrew as Justice here and many other times in the Old Testament. The TNIV,ESV,HCSB and many other versions need to follow suit.]

    14:20
that scion of an evil race

    17:14
Such is the portion of those who despoil us

    21:3
my loins are filled with anguish
    [exactly like the ESV]

    27:8
    Expunging and expelling

    29:16
    He made me not!

    30:10
Do not descry for us what is right

    32:9
    O complacent ladies

    33:14
    trembling grips the impious

    57:5
You who immolate children in the wadies
